Generally strep throat produces a much higher fever. You are probably suffering from a cold and the sore throat is caused by irritation due to post-nasal drip from your stuffy nose. Try a decongestant and an antihistamine, along with some ibuprofen for the pain. If your fever spikes over 101 and the sore throat pain intensifies, see your doc for a strep test where he/she will take a swab from your throat to see if it grows out the strep bacteria. If so, you have strep throat and you require an antibiotic.

if there is puss pockets on your tonsils then that is the definite sign. but usualy you will run a higher fever then 99.6.

Symptoms of strep: generally look and feel awful with strep throat! They can have high fevers, very painful throats, often severe difficulty swallowing, and pus which can sometimes be seen covering the tonsils. These complaints mean that the child should see the doctor right away, as distinguishing viral and bacterial causes of tonsil infection is very important for correct treatment of the infection.

If a strep infection is detected, an antibiotic is prescribed.

have someone look at the back of your throat with a light.....if they see any kind of white splotches or white puss looking stuff...then you have strept....
