Is there any hope for schizo?!

Question: my cousin whom we adopted since he was 3 months old will be turning 19 soon and been to mental hospital twice since he was 15.. now he lives with my old parents in Philippines and we buy all the necessary medicines for his mental illness but the problem is he became a brat and have drug addict friends,he befriended the wrong people.. hes been bullied a lot when he was in high school prior to showing his mental illness so being friends with this kind of kids in the street is like a connection for him so no one would bully him again. Problem is this delinquent friends have gotten his watch, fone even his shirts and sneakers and sometimes he would go home wearing a different kind of dirty shirt. He had learned to lie and steal to my mom who has been recently diagnosed with highblood and diabetes..I feel so helpless, I live in diff country now and what if my parents are gone, who will take care of him?

Hello,
Congratulation's on caring for your cousin. Many people give up on such people with mental illness.
Schizophrenia there is no cure. It is also not the persons fault and it apears you know this.
Many people take advantage of those who take drugs as well. People will befriend them only to take advantage of them, it is so sad!!
Other countries have different rules for mental health. USA has came a long way, however not far enough.
It would be good if you could get your cousin here to the states (you do live here?). You could get ward over his money and medical, meaning you could have say in where he goes even if in a hosital or home, even if he feels he is ok.
Mental health is no fun, the person afflicted does not have total control of themselves. This is when family needs to step in.
Good luck and I wish your family well!!

yes there is hope with the right treatment and care

Schizophrenia is a difficult disorder. I work with the mentally ill, including many with schizophrenia. There is hope- and the hope lies in taking his medications regularly as prescribed. Many people with schizophrenia do very well and live independent lives, however some may need some sort of supervision for the rest of their lives. There are more resources for the mentally ill in the US. perhaps he would do better moving back to the US where there would be more help for him. Good Luck!
