Go to the bookstore and get a couple of books to read: "Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year" and maybe also "Atkins Diabetes Revolution".

Excellent books. they have helped me to come to terms with the rest of my life on meds, food plan, exercise, and all without much help from my 20th century doctors.

My doctors handed me the scripts for some pills and said "you are a bit too sweet, take these and come back and see me in 3 months"

They have never refered me to dietician, CDE, or diabetes classes. Actually there are none of the above in our area! I would have to drive 200 miles any direction for such help.

Start walking!! a couple of blocks for a week, then up the number of blocks or by 5 minutes every week till you are walking 60 minutes as fast as you can every day.

Eat low carb food plan! Atkins phase 2, Zone Diet, or South Beach Living phase 2 are all really good plans. Just figure out what are good foods to eat and stick to it.

They are not as some say High Fat or High Protein food plans. Instead they are sufficient in fat, protein and carbohydrates.

One site that will help a lot is http://www.mendosa.com
David Mendosa is the originator of the Glycemic Index and has a diabetes site there. His GI listings are extensive. Choose foods from the 50 or lower levels.

Test glucose level, eat a food, test again 90 minutes to 2 hours after the first test. Journal eveything including your exercise. If the food spikes more than 50 points decide whether to delete the food or have it in limited amounts.

a good site to ask and get answers is; http://diabetes.about.com this is a free site, but must have a screenname and password to participate in the forum. Our hostess Deb is a CDE and has lots of very good articles on front page.

good luck hon!

get educated on it..learn about your exchanges, eat healthy..cut out the sugar and fats start eating whole grains, Fresh fruits and veggies..make an appointment with a Dietition so he/she can teach you about everything stated above...and exercise!!! exercising can help keep your Blood sugars in control. Take your meds!! i have been a diabetic for 14 years, its scary at first but being a diabetic you still can live a normal life.. at first i was on 3 diff medications but im at the point where i'm down to one and almost off because i do take care of myself..it's not a death sentence. When it comes to food it;'s about moderation, you want to keep your carb count under 200g per day, but thats what works for me and i know in most diabetic diets they encourage that but like i said speak to a dietition/nutritionist on this...good luck hun..

First you need to get a doctor. Have regular check ups, diet and exercise. Your treatment is different depending on exactly which form of type II you have.

Here is a link with information about your type of diabetes.

This link will take you directly to the treatment page.

avoid eating foods rich in carbohydrates because they contain a high level of sugar.... also, exercise regularly, and don't forget to take your medicine.....

Learn how to check your blood. Know what range your doctor wants you to try to maintain.
Limit caffeine, carbs and sugar. Look for whole grain foods in the store. I have found whole grain sugar free bread. I also have been buying whole grain muffins, pasta and cereal.
Also try to walk a few times per week.

The first treatment for type 2 diabetes is often meal planning for blood glucose (sugar) control, weight loss, and exercising. Sometimes these measures are not enough to bring blood glucose levels down near the normal range. The next step is taking a medicine that lowers blood glucose levels.
