Pancreatitis in men is frightening, but not always as serious as some of the sites make it out. For starters, in a lot of cases with men, what they find is that they actually have gallstones- and one has gotten stuck in the common duct and in turn blocked the pancreas. There are also times when it just gets inflammed, and will settle down all on it's own. It's more common in men than women as well. Since this is evidently his first attack, what he has is acute pancreatitis. They will do an ultrasound to see what things look like in the area- to see if there are gallstones or a cyst. If there are gallstones, then he's in to have that removed, and the blockage removed from the duct. If it's a cyst, they may opt to keep an eye on it or if it's large enough they will surgically drain or remove it. Either way, the problem will be solved. In a lot of cases, they don't find a clearcut reason, and it goes away on it's own anyway in the following weeks. The person best able to explain whats going on with your husband would be his attending physician. Just make a list of the questions you have, and pin the doctor down for an explaination. It is the doctor's job, after all. For a little clearer explaination in the meantime, try

which will give you all the info you would want, and some places to look for help. Good luck, and hope he gets better quick. And don't stress too badly. I've seen wives bring in husbands that looked like death warmed up, and had them out of the door in less than a week in much better spirits.

It would help if you had a more specific question.
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas usually due to gallstones or alcohol abuse. The symptoms are pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite. The treatment depends on the severity of the illness. Usually it involves fluid replacement with IV fluid, NPO (no food by mouth- to reduce irritation) and pain meds.

Oh man. My grandma had it and ( i don't want to freak you out but...) almost died twice while in the hospital, of course she was way older than your husband is I'm sure. The only thing i can say is to trust your doctors (make sure he's in the best possible care), go on webmd, and look around. that website is usually helpful. Best wishes!!

gallstones..usually.

try not to worry..he'll be fine...
