Autism question?!

Question: I have a 16month old boy who has not yet been diagnosed with autism he is not talking at all he also has a very bad temper he throws fits and bangs his head and throws things, he does not point if you ask him where mommy is or where daddy is, And sometimes doesn't even acknowledge your talking to him, does this sound like he might be autistic?? I have been trying to get early intervention for him but everyone seems to be booked for the next 3 to 6months, does anyone know of a doctor or program in the north jersey area and while i'm waiting for a doctor are there any suggestions of things to do for him.

First good for you for being a dedicated parent. I would ask dr to make a referral to a speech theapist for language therapy and another to see an occupational therapist. OT work with sensory integration and this could be the cause of some of the child problems. I too feel your burden for waiting. I have two kids with autism spectrum. It is not too early for an evaluation. Most of the time they take a wait and see approach and go on and start ABA therapy and others as this will help child now, usually child recieves PDD-nos diagnosis and is watched very carefully and might be upgraded or down graded as he gets older. Contact the school sped dept and ask for child find for an eval, or contact a ped neuropsychologist, they may be faster to get into if first step early ed progam is full. As you are in therapy you will feel better knowing that your child is being helped and it will be better than just sitting and waiting. It does sound like this child has autistic behaviors and New jearsy has one of the highest autism rates in the country. Also, evaluate his vision and hearing, take him to a ped allergist to rule out a food allergy that could be cause of irritability, ask for a RAST test. Google children's hospital there and see if they have a social workes who specializes in behavior therapy, you might be able to piece mill your way in a little easier until a Dr. opens up. Like I said befor do not just sit there time is precious. Read all you can on autism and aspergers, educate yourself so you can better understand your child and the challenges that might be coming. Just remember autism is manageable with early intervention and therapy, and always celebate each little thing and see your child before the disability. Eventually, join a online support group in your area, this is essential. Good Luck

The symptoms do sound like autism. You should contact your pediatrician about this and ask him/her to point you in the right direction. Don't know how close you are to Manhattan, but NYC has a great child psych division so you may want to get in touch with them. Also do yourself a favor and go online and read as much as you can about it and what to do for your son until you can get him to a doctor. Good luck.

There is a conference call tonight at 9:00 EST on autism being conducted by Jerri Curless Finley with special guest Dr. Ralph and Dr. Ringel.

Amino acids and polyphenols (antioxidants) in limu are able to bind to heavy metals in the urinary tract, preventing a build up in the bloodstream.

Heavy metals have been linked to learning disorders and hyperactivity in children.
