Snoring Problems - Tonsillectomy??!

Question: my l4 year old has been snoring for many years and he is not getting a restful nite's sleep and interefereing with school. i took him to an eye/ear/nose specialist who recommends a tonsilectomy because his tonisils are huge and his airways are restricted and once removed, his snoring should subside tremendously and allow him to sleep a restful night. does anyone know about this or comment. thanks.

I suggest you review the February, 2008 article on WebMD using the link I've shown below. The article starts out flatly saying that tonsillectomy should not be used to treat snoring in children. However, it IS recommended if there is overt Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I suspect your doctor believes there is OAS present and that he is not doing it strictly because he thinks removing the tonsils will cure the snoring. In any event, he should do fine during the surgery with a good postoperative result. The following is an excerpt from the article.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are surgeries that remove the tonsils or adenoids. These surgeries are:

Used to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children and adults.
Rarely used to treat snoring in adults.
Not used to treat snoring in children.

Why It Is Done
Your doctor may suggest tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy to treat sleep apnea if you have enlarged tonsils and adenoids that are blocking your airway during sleep. This is often the first treatment option for children, because enlarged tonsils and adenoids are usually the cause of their sleep apnea.

It is true. Check this site-

Hope it will cure his snoring.
Good luck!
