Actually, there might be some truth in what your parents are saying. You can lose a lot of body heat through the soles of your feet (up to 30%) especially if you walk barefooted on tiled floors. A loss of body heat often leads to flu-like symptoms; shivering, sneezing, headaches etc. You might not neccesarily catch a cold or flu (viruses are another thing), but you can still get them for losing too much body heat as your immune system weakens.
Do yourself (and your parents) a favor and put some kind of footwear on. good luck

thats is old school
it is also false to think you can get a cold by going outside with wet hair, ect...
Modern science is amazing!!

Colds are not caused by being cold. You could be naked in Antarctica and not get sick. You get a cold because of 2 things:

- viruses
- quickly moving from a hot place to a cold place, temporarily weakening your immune system, and causing the viruses already inside your body to attack

you can't get a cold from anything except someone with a cold. Your parents just want you to wear socks? I guess?

No. But if it will keep your parents off your back, it may be worth it.

I have a friend who wears flip flops all winter. She is rarely sick either.

The bottom line answer is NO, however, maybe in a twisted sort of way you can catch a cold from not wearing socks.

A cold is caused by a virus. We are much more apt to being affected by the virus if our defenses are weakened ... like when we are already sick with a bacterial infection, or have another illness, like cancer. If we aren't eating properly, so our bodies are struggling to find the nourishment it needs, we catch viruses more easily. Also, when your body is under a tremendous amount of stress, it will catch a virus more easily ... Now, if a person consistantly dresses improperly, so his/her body is working hard to maintain a regular temperature, you are stressing your body ... but I don't think not having socks on is causing your body temperature to be all that much lower.

An extra note here ... Overdressing can be just as bad as underdressing. If you overdress an infant or child, so that their body is working hard to cool off, you can increase their chances of catching colds. Any pediatrician will tell you to dress your baby the way you dress yourself ... if you have on shorts and a tank top, then they should too. A baby doesn't need a snowsuit if you don't need a jacket.

no you can't catch a cold from not wearing socks

being cold and wet however will stress your body out leaving it more susceptible to pathogens
thats why more people get sick in the winter

Nope. Though now that I'm a mother, I tell my 3 year old the same thing. LOL Must be a parent thing.
