Does anyone out there have a child who suffers from acid reflux?!

Question: My son is 4yrs old and has suffered from acid reflux since the day he was born. Well, at least that's what I think it is anyway. He may have been misdiagnosed. He's constantly spitting up everything he eats or drinks. The only thing that makes me think it's not acid reflux is that a lot of the time the food comes back up right away even as he's eating it. It won't even have time to sit in his belly and it will come back up. Tests have been done at Children's Hosp. and they can't find anything wrong. They said he would grow out of it. That was two yrs ago! We've tried Axcid and Previcid and they don't work. No Nexium. I put him on a special diet of org food. We also cut out Chocolate, caffiene, citrus, tomatoes, high fat foods, pasta, and spicy foods. ACVinegar does not help and neither does baking soda. He's learned to spit it out as it comes up so now he's not getting any nutrition. He's having more tests done on the 25th of Feb. I'm tired of Drs. blowing me off! What should I do?

My 6 month old grandson has been on Zantac since shortly after birth (he is also on soy formula) they have been increasing it as his weight increases. It seems to help if GERD is what was causing his reflux and not the other problem he has now been diagnosed with, which shouldn't be what your child has being 4 years old already...with what I assume is normal development every other way. I hope you will get some firm answers soon, I understand your frustration. Also, try to be calm when you feed him and not reactive, children learn to push our buttons in ways we can't imagine and although I'm not questioning his problem, he may have taken it to the level of a game after all this time.

Are you sure its not something psychological, maybe its your son doing it subconsiously? Just keep trying to find a Dr. that will listen to you.

He's probably too old for this but my sister used to give her son prunes in baby food form before he ate any meal so it stimulated his digestive system in to digesting things before they came back up. Now that he's four, that might not work. I would go to the health food store and talk to the employees and they might have a natural remedy or some type of herbal extract that might help him.

I would be inclined to agree with the previous answer, if all possible tests have been done in hospital proving that there isn't obstructions giving a reason for not getting the food down and ruling out the reflux, it may well be that he is picking up on your anxiety whilst he's eating. Have you tried just eating alongside him and not reacting to the "spitting up". This must be very difficult for you, wish you well. Will he eat things that he enjoys, what about things like a chocolate mouse, or even some chips just as a little experiment?
