First of all the outward symptoms of type 1 and 2 are virtually the same. The body is reacting to high blood sugar levels - how the levels got high are not at issue. The body dumps the extra sugar into the urine (hence why you are thirsty and have to pee a lot). You lose weight because the body can't use glucose for energy (insulin resistance or lack of insulin) thus it feed off of your body fat. This is dangerous because it leads to ketone acidosis. Does your breath smell like fruit?

Step one for you is to go to your doctor and get an Hemoglobin A1C test (replaced the glucose tolerance test which was horrible). This test measures average glucose in your blood stream over a 3 month period. Glucose permanently bonds to hemoglobin in the blood. The higher the concentration of glycosylated hemoglobin - the higher your average blood sugar was.

If the results of this test are significantly greater than 7% - you are diabetic.

The next step is for the doctor to determine the type, 1 or 2. However, since you indicate you are 61, you are most likely a type 2 - adult onset diabetes. Type 1 normally develops in children.

I was diagnosed over ten years ago. The drugs are a pain but it is a disease you can live with.

well think of the positive

Well if you have family members with diabetes, use their monitor and check your blood sugar.

If you think you have type I diabetes, then the risk test means nothing. Type I happens haphazardly and there is no pattern or way to predict it.

I will say before I got diagnosed, I had the most unquenchable thirst. I probably drank well over a gallon of water every day and I peed like there was no tomorrow.

Test your blood sugar and that should pretty much answer your question.

Honestly u dnt have that much to be worried about, and as said the people above me, you would know if you had it. B4 i was diagnosed i was trinking more water then any human should in a yr, and was peeing like there was no tomorrow. You will also loose ALOT! of weight. i was down to 86 lbs when i was dignosed. But really you shouldnt have any worries. taking care of diabetes is really easy

Don't be scared! Just be concerned enough to get a complete physical with good blood work. You expressed enough symptoms to be concerned. After the doctor visit a dietitian to lean how to count carbs and some foods to avoid. There aren't many. It's more the quantity and quality.

If you doctor diagnosis is that you are diabetic, then you that as wake up call. Eat better, the right foods moderately and find an exercise routine you will do almost every day.

Do this and in about 45 day you could be better than ever physically, but still diabetic. I was. Now life is great, I live better and healthier than ever before. I expect to live a very long and active life.
