ACL, Meniscus & Chondroplasty to be performed at same time?!

Question: This is the first time I'm having knee surgery and my anxiety level is very high. I had my pre-op yesterday and the PA said that my knee looked like that of some one older than 60 (I'm 36....didn't that make me feel good!) I will say that I spent quite a bit of time in my young adulthood being morbidly obese and now that I've lost that weight I'm OCD about exercising. He said that a combination of the two have wrecked the knee. (That originally was torn when I was 17 but went incorrectly diagnosed causing severe osteoarthritis.)

My question is - is it normal to be overly ansious about this? I've always heard that two places you don't want surgery would be your knee and your back. My doctor is one of the best in Atlanta - but....I'm still stressed over it! Thoughts?!?!?

Everyone is nervous about surgery because the outcome isn't certain. Luckily, the pre-op meds calm you down quickly, and you don't usually remember much of anything after you slip into the hospital gown.

Given all the problems with your knee, you don't have much to lose from a knee operation - the outcome is almost certainly going to be a better knee than you started with, but you can't expect miracles. Usually with a surgery like yours, the thing that counts most toward recovery is the rehab exercises over the year following the surgery, so much of the outcome is up to you. You can easily overdo the rehab exercises, but most people tend to neglect them.

Hi....I had this surgery in July...I don't know if anyone could have been as anxious as I was, since I never had any other surgery before. I thought I would go out of my mind with worry. Well, I had the surgery...then needed a second in September...now I am as good as new. The knee is about as normal as it will ever be. My point is, I feel for you with the anxiety, but all will be fine..They paralyzed my leg so I didn't even feel the after pain for about 2 days, and by then it was bearable. Good Luck...and know that your doc does these surgeries day after day..
