No it is not normal , for you two to have this , this long, your doctor should have ordered either antibiotic eye drops or a gel to put into your eyelid, also you need to use a clean wash cloth and towel every time you clean your eyes, you may be reinfecting your eyes, most differentially you need antibiotics for both of you .
Not sure go see A doctor or call you Nurse or Doctor. I'm sure they can help you better.
I have no comments on what your GP did. If you really want a cure for your ailment please take Argentum Met-30 & Euphrasia 30 in alternation once in 4 hrs for four days and report.
