What causes sudden serious nose bleeds?!

Question: My husband has been admitted to hospital today with a serious nose bleed that has not stopped since 6.45 this morning.

Are there any experts out there that can tell me how and why this can happen and what he can do to prevent it from happening to him again?

First, people are not normally put in the hospital for nose bleed so apparently it is something more than the norm. My mother has them frequently and they do not last long. The doctor told her not worry about it because she could have had a blood clot and that was natures way of getting rid of it without serious consequences.

She 86 yrs. old and has had them for years. Sometimes a small blood vessel will break open and cause it too. Also cold sores in the nose will bleed. In most cases they are helpful rather than harmful but your husbands case sounds different. I hope by the time you get this, they have stopped the bleeding and he is okay. I would like to hear the follow up and outcome of this if you will please.

Don't panic and best wishes :)

high blood pressure could be a factor...

Usually uncontrolled hypertension

high blood pressure

It's usually high blood pressure. Best go to the doctors to get checked out. The nose may need to be cauterised.

snorting cocaine does this if youve been doing it for some years. do you know if your hubby is doing drugs on tthe sly to keep up at work or something.

My son used to suffer frequent sudden, heavy nosebleeds...and we were just told that it was weak blood vessels in the nostrils. He had them cauterised several times till eventually they stopped altogether.
The hospital may suggets cauterisation anyway, failing that, they will show him how to sit with his head slightly forward, and will show him how to pinch the bridge of his nose to stem the flow.

heat, high blood pressure, swimming, in the water, problems with adonoids (the tissue between the nose and ears).

high blood pressure usually only causes small nose bleeds, my son used to have serious nose bleeds, it was caused by lots of little blood vessels inside his nose being too close to the surface so it didnt take much for one to rupture, he had a small operation to cautorise them, everything was ok for about 5 years, then the nose bleeds returned, he still has them now but doesnt want to go through the op again, he is in the best place your husband, they will find out what is causing his bleeds, so dont worry, good luck and hope he is better soon

Could be Wegeners Granulomatosis

He's in the best place, this disease attacks the collagen in the blood vessels in all parts of the body. It can be controlled with drugs if caught early enough.

A base ball bat usually does it, or knuckle dusters.
