Is ecoli contagious?!

Question: My mother in law has been in and out of the hospital and diagnosed and re-diagnosed with no avail, then finally she was told she had ecoli. Now about 7 months later my father in law was also diagnosed with it. they were the primary child care providers for my oldest daughter about 2 years ago (my mother in law has been in and out of the hospital for 4 years) we have been down to visit them 11 times in the past 2 years and my mother in law stayed up here with us for 3 months after my second daughter was born. do we all need to be checked? is this transferable between people or just foods, or could they have contaminated thier household.

E coli is a gram negative bacteria that normally lives in our intestines. they do not cause any harm to us if they are the ones normally staying in our insides. However, E. coli becomes pathogenic or may cause a disease such as vomitting and diarrhea when we get infected by E. coli from outside sources, usually from drinking water contaminated with feces.
You better check out your water source. You dont only get E. coli from the household and not because your housemates have it, you got it from them, usually the housemates get the infection from a common source... as i have said, a contaminated source.. drinking water is the most common but you also get it from contaminated food.

E coli is not a virus, it is a bacteria. It lives naturally in the body (intestine and such) and can infect food if you don't wash your hands properly. It makes you sick because it is a bacteria..

It isn't like a disease you get for the rest of your life, it is like getting an infection or food poisoning.

yea its transferrable. wash yr hands after you wipe your ***. e coli lives in yr colon. your daughter doesn't have it. buy soap. omfg

Well if you eat their bodily fluids then no you cant get it from them.. But it sounds like there is something in there home that is contaminated with that and they need to clean everything in there home and get all new food including Ketchup and Mustard. I t could be the refrigerator that is not keeping the food cold enough. You need to tell them to check that. It is not normal for someone to get it so much unless they keep coming in contact with it. It doesn't just stay in your system.
On More thing if they don't wash there hands after they use the Bathroom then they cook or prepare food that is another way to get it. Because it lives in everybody Bowl and that could be why. They don't wash their hands. That's not good.
