Are you living with a chronic illness? How do you cope?!

Question: Actually I'm only 15 and I have chronic Strep throat. I also have cronic mono. It really takes a large toll on my life. I spend a lot of days sick. When I start getting sick I find that if I just rest for about a day I am up and running just fine the following day. If that doesn't help i will take a lot of vitamins to help my immune system. But metally knowing that this is all going to happen again I just think of it as a challenge. As something that is my goal and to beat it. That way instead of it being an illness it makes me work harder to be better that what it is. That's how I personally cope with it

I am living with chronic illness'-back- degenerative disk disease, scoliosis & arthritis, mental- depression & recovering alcoholic/addict and migraines. I cope by using a heating pad, stretching, praying, focusing on something else, crying if I need to, hugging my dog, talking to someone about it, journaling, massage (self)- have several massagers- even a zero gravity massage chair, alternate activity & recup time(with heating pad- pain medicine & migraine (last resort, as little as possible because I dont like the fogginess it gives me)

I live with depression and obsessive compulsive disorder as well as hypothyroidism. I cope by trying to be gentle with myself, keep my immune system in good shape and find support through friends and others who are in similar situations.

I have been doing so for years I'm Asthmatic, An enlarged heart, numerous allergies, hiatus hernia, gall bladder and kidney stones. This apart from having had three back operations first two went wrong...but it's okay now.

I suffered post traumatic stress after the operation to my back and I have just been told that I require eye surgery as I have something wrong with the retina and the macular of my right eye. But that will have to wait I'm too busy getting on with my life.

How do you cope you just do it's amazing no matter how dreadful you feel some days you keep going. I have a treadmill that I use daily to keep my fitness levels up which is so important when you have a chronic illness.

And all this from someone who used to be an all round athlete and who always looked after herself and ate a good diet. They say you never know and it's just as well.

So if you still feel bad after reading this catalogue of errors I hope you get better soon. All the best ...and always look on the bright side of life......

I posted on here about developing dysautonomia last Nov. after a bout with mono. I already had some health issues before that, but NOTHING compared to how I feel every day now. And the sad thing is so far I haven't found any information that gives much hope in me getting better.Only about half of the people that get post-viral dysautonomia make a recovery. As far as coping, I just try to take one day at a time. Some days I can do more than others and I definitely take advantage of those times and then there are days when I can hardly get up. It's depressing at times, especially when I can't do the things I want to with my kids, but that's just where my life is right now so I'm trying to make the best of it. I'm also a Christian and try to spend time each day praying--that always gives me strength to make it through the rough times. Hope this helps and good luck with your health.

I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and have chronic pain and
stiffness. One of the first things you need to do is get rid
of as much stress as you possibly can. That will help the
pain level some. Relaxing with a heating pad and nice
smelling candle in a comfortable position helps me to
take as little medicine as I can get away with, especially
at night when the pain can get unbearable.

One day at a time. When I get really frustrated I have a great support team and a wonderful dog. When I get really depressed I try to find any new information and studies that have been done on the illness I have. When I'm in a lot of pain I just think about how good I really have it, there are children much younger then me in a lot more pain then me. I try to focus on all the things that I can do and the good things in life. I just try to deal the best I can with whatever life brings, just like everyone else.
