Severe vomiting in a 2 year old?!

Question: My little one is having a severe vomiting episode, it started 4 hours ago at 3 am. He is throwing up every 15 minutes and lately he has been throwing up a frothy yellow/green substance. He has not had a runny nose so I am not inclined to think it is mucous. I am wondering if it is bile then what are the indications of that? Is it an urgent situation and I should call the on call Doctor?

Also, he is not dehydrated at the moment. I know the signs/symptoms of such and am watchful. No fever or diarrhea either.

It sounds like a normal stomach virus. What you are seeing is probably stomach acid. You are doing the right thing by watching for dehydration. Something you can do for vomiting is to give him tiny amounts of clear liquids every 20 minutes until he goes about 8 hours without vomiting. This will serve to hydrate him and also give him something in his tummy. I would start by giving him only 1 tsp of clear liquid every 20 minutes while he's awake. Once he tolerates that for a few hours, you can increast to two teaspoons, so on and so forth. After 8 hours of no vomiting, you can try bland food like bread or saltine crackers.

This is the protocol we recommend for our patients in pediatrics. I hope it works for you!

Could he have eaten something that is not "agreeing" with him? The yellow/green frothy substance is his stomach acid from puking on an empty stomach. I've been there before, and man that is the pits. He will dehydrate quickly if he is vomiting that much, hopefully it will slow or even stop soon.

If I were in your position, I'd give him another half an hour or so, and if he his vomiting episodes continue I'd call his doctor.

Good luck1!! I hope the little one feels better real soon!

take the baby to the hospital, the baby might have the flu

I agree with the above answer from the pediatrics professional. I had a similar virus a few months ago, and I was throwing up for about 10 hours off and on. By the end I was throwing up stomach acid (the green/yellow substance). I just tried to sip little bits of water when I could between bouts of vomiting. Your poor little one will be a bit miserable for a while, but when it has run its course he ought to bounce back fairly quickly. Good luck!

I am not sure I think it is something in your childs stomach. You said it could be mucous and he doesnt have a runny nose. hmmmmm. Sounds like you should take this situation to the doctor.

Hope your baby gets better soon
Good Luck

Call the doctor. Now. Do not second guess anything with a 3 year old. They can go from throwing up to dangerously ill in less than a heartbeat. The green frothy stuff is stomach acid, his tummy is empty now, all that is left is acid. this is not a pleasant thing for anyone, let alone a child.
Call the doctor now.
And, a person can be dagerously dehydrated without showing symptoms.
Quit reading and call the doctor. This is FRiday, your doctor might be available. Tommorrow is Saturday, he might not be.
