How do I control my eczema??!

Question: I've always had very dry skin, but about 3 years ago, things got worse. I went to the Dermatologist and he told me that I had eczema. I was also having trouble with my tonsils and went to the ear nose and throat doctor who gave me an allergy testing. He said that I was allergic to cats and dogs. Well, around the time the eczema popped up, I had gotten a French Bulldog. He's seriously amazing. I love him more than any dog I've ever had. But he could very well possibly be the cause of my eczema. I cannot bear to get rid of him. He means so much to me and my boyfriend. Has anyone ever had any success with any topical lotions or even supplements? Or anything else?

I have extremley bad aczema and have had several doctors prescribe lotions.Firstly, you should avoid scented soaps, lotions, and shampoos. Also, the ingredient cocamide monoethanolamine in some shampoos could be irratating to your skin.A shampoo that does not have cocamide monoethanolamine in it is Selsun Blue, and even though it is very drying it should stop some of the irratation.Lotions like Eucerin and Lubriderm are good too.A soap that could help is Cetaphil. Some people use the liquid soap, but personally I prefer the bar soap because the liquid soap is non-alkaline and it is hard to measure the amount needed. Also, certain laundry detergents like Tide could be irratating to your skin if you wash your clothes in it.I would reccommend All.

Oddly enough, sitting in the sun helps.

sitting in the sun will not help, it will just make the eczema less visible until your tan goes away. Ask your dermatologist to prescribe medicine for you, and if he hasn't already, see a different dermatologist!

Get on allergy medication

Avoid long, hot showers.

Use a good lotion like, Lubriderm or Curel.

Try elicina cream, which worked the best for me. Get it at www.elicina.com

My son has eczema...for bad flare ups use a RX cream called Locoid. To keep from breaking out use Aveeno lotion several times a day! That lotion is awesome!

Avoid scented products such as bubble baths, strong body arasoles (try water based ones?) and things like this, use natural body products and things that are designed for sensitive skin, Nivea is a good make to try and they Body shop will do some lotions to sooth skins ect. As an alternative go to your doctor who can prescribe a cream for it
Hope it clears up ok bye

With the eczema, the skin can be affected in a number of unpleasant ways. Location of the rash, severity of the disorder, and even appearance can be different. Eczema and the other skin conditions aren't limited to a certain region of the body. There are some areas of the skin that are more commonly affected, but it can and does appear in a variety of less typical places. When you have eczema, skin responds very well to natural treatments. Skin Original is an all natural treatment that will help relieve the symptoms of eczema. With so many different types of skin disorders, finding the most effective cure for eczema is a high priority.

Cetaphil cream and Aquaphor creams help a lot. Also, I would check the ingredient list on the foods that you eat to make sure there isn't any MSG (Monosodium Glutimate) -a flavor enhancer. It's in A LOT of foods. It makes me break out in eczema everytime I eat it. Give it a try for a couple of weeks while puting on cetaphil a couple of times a day and see if you clear up.

You can try:
-taking Allegra, Zyrtec, or Claritin to help with itching
-moisturize with Cetaphil lotion or cream
-wash with very mild soap, Dove Sensitive skin or Cetaphil wash
-use free and clear laundry detergents, NO dryer sheets
-wear all cotton clothing if possible
-keep your dog as clean as possible, and vacuum the hair up as much as possible too. Try to keep your bedding clean.
-a dermatologist can give you a prescription cream which will really help keep the eczema under control. If all the suggestions given on Answers don't control it, consider seeing the derm for a prescription lotion.

the best lotion i ever used for my eczema is Des Owen, its doctor prescribed and heals it right away..
if you live in a warm enviroment it improves and in the summer improves as well

the only thing that sitting in the sun does, is it dries it out a little, but it doesn't help much. you need to not itch it, avoid taking hot showers, and go to a doctor and ask for a cream. i've had it for a couple of years, and the cream works. just tell the doctor that you have eczema. but you don't have to get rid of your dog, just go to the doctor. good luck and don't itch it!

I've had eczema since I was a child. I've seen many dermatologists and a naturopathic practitioner over the years and have been told there are two main types of eczema. Contact (caused from substances outside the body) and atopic (caused by sensitivity to certain foods). The naturopath told me it was a yeast problem in my bloodstream. Anyway bottom line: Lidex ointment from the dermatologist knocks it right out! I must warn you, that is a heavy duty cortisone ointment, but it is also available in a cream. You could get a lesser percentage of cortisone, since cortisone can thin your skin with continued use. There are other choices your physician will make the best one for your condition. You can also use Keri Lotion after your bath or shower. Follow the directions for Keri bath oil/lotion - it should help a lot with the dryness, as well as keeping the moisture in after you bathe. Keep your skin hydrated as best you can from the inside as well as the outside. Coffee and other caffeinated beverages are dehydrating because of their diuretic effect..

Cassie, hello. The dog is hardly the cause of your eczema. It is possible, though, that it aggravates it a little. From my experience I suggest that you try anti-eczema cream and spray by Champori. It is herbal (free of steroids) and works better (and faster) than anything else I used.
Best,
Bernadette
