Why does this happen when I fly?!

Question: This rarely happens to me when I fly but when it does I have a blocked up nose in the first place so that could have something to do with it. Anyway, about 10 mins into the decent I get a really painful feeling in my eyes, like as if a blood vessel's about to explode and it's just really painful in my head, eyes and top of nose and of course, ears popping but that happens to me anyway. Can anyone tell me whats happening? And is there a cure for it?
Thanks very much.

Hey James,

It's called a block. Your sinus cavity can't equalize to the same air pressure as outside, and it causes a "squeeze". Scuba divers have this problem sometimes. Try holding your nose and trying to blow air out through it. (Shut your mouth too.) Another trick is to chew gum, or to swallow.

I'd personally recommend taking an anti-hystamine pill before flying. It'll open those sinus cavities right up.

u have sinus related blockage ,u need to be examined and your sinuses checked

YOu should talk to your Dr. about it, but mean while try taking some sudafed before you get on the plane. This will open up your sinuses and help with the pressure.

You need to take a decongestant if you have a cold and you fly.
It is not good for you to fly with your nose all clogged and you are not able to clear your ears.

Everyone has a "hole" in the corner of their eye called the "punctum". Its for draining tears. It drains directly into your sinuses. This is why everyone gets a runny nose when they cry.

When you are congested, air can get trapped in here. The condition is called "obstructed punctum". As the atmosphere pressure drops - the trapped air expands causing pressure and pain.

Other posters suggested decongestants prior to flying - this will usually alleviate the problem.
