Snap! I get this too, particularly when I am feeling tense or stressed (which is all too often...)

Firstly I should say that iron deficiency could cause this but if you have been checked for that then it could possibly be stress related like my breathing thing...

If I am feeling really relaxed I can take a full breath, right down to where I need it.

But at other times I feel like as hard as I try, I can only take what feels in a way like half of a breath. And I sigh an awful lot too.

I have to say that when I get like this, I really make the effort to take a deep breath and it never works.

I think with me it is stress related, although without details of course I don't know if you are the same there!

Is it like you breath as far as you can go , but can't get the "hit" of a big sigh? If so your symptoms are the same as mine.

I have read something about this on the net, that concentrating on it makes it worse, which I recognise in my case.

I will be honest in saying that I smoke, albeit lightly (average 5 a day) but these symptoms have been with me since the start of my puberty I think (way before I started smoking) - That's when I started feeling the stresses of the world!

Maybe you should mention it to your doctor next time you go, to be on the safe side (make a double appointment so they know you have another worry to check over).

But you do sound just like me. With me the more I think of it, the harder it seems to be to get a good full breath, but thankfully most of the time I am too busy to think of it and guess what? I am still breathing, still here!.

Don't concentrate on your breathing, it's an instinct, it does it without our thought! That's what I try to convince myself.

I really hope this helps and good luck. xxxx

do you smoke if so quit

What do you mean by 'it feels like it doesn't go round'?

Might be the start of a chest infection.

I think I know what you mean - like, you breathe deeply but it doesn't reach that critical point where you feel like you've taken in enough breath?
I used to be worse than I am now, I've never had any medical advice about this but this is what I did. Try and yawn delibrately (even if you're not tired) as deeply as you can. At first this didn't work for me but after a few weeks I was getting enough breath when I needed some every few times I yawned. You can do it in a room by yourself so no one questions you about being tired :)
And if you find yourself in the house alone maybe try going up and down the stairs a few times for a little exercise without going over the top, or going for a brisk walk. This should help your breathing also. Good luck! :)

EDIT - I do not smoke and never have, but I do have mild asthma. The asthma doesn't trouble me very often, unless this breathing problem is a result of it. But, the breathing problem isn't so much of a problem any more.
