Hepatitis A?!

Question: It was just announced that our local grocery store is having a problem with Hepatitis A. Apparently if you've eaten any raw produce since Jan 7 there is reason to be concerned.

I'm not really up on this disease and calls to the Dr have been futile as everyone in Buffalo is worried and the lines are busy.

My kids are nearly 18 and 9, we do eat a lot of fresh fruits and produce (for health--ha ha) and always wash, etc.

What are your thoughts? Symptoms? Prevention? Consequences? Outcomes? We are all healthy overall, my husband and I are 45.

We've never traveled out of the country (so no shots for that)--other than almost monthly trips to Canada.

How freaked out should we be--I don't wish to over-react but on the other hand I don't want to dismiss anything that will endanger us.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer. Fine thing to wake up to in the morning paper!

Hep A is usually transmitted by an infected person not washing their hands after using the bathroom and touching something u eat. I think it can also be transmitted by dirty water. Hep A usually has acute symptoms of stomach pain, nausea, vomitting. if yall are not experiencing any symptoms i would not be concerned. If any of your family gets sick, Hep A is treatable usually with no permanant damage. If any of your family complains of stomach pain or any Hep A symptoms take them to the dr. hope this helps.

how long has it beensince you have eaten the produce from this store? the symptoms of Hep A are very much like flu symptoms... if no one is having symptoms and it has been well over a week i dont think you have too much to worry about.... you can always call the dr and have blood test done just to be sure..... the good thing about Hep A instead of all the other Hep out there is that as long as it is caght and treated then its not that bad..... it wont hurt you once it is treated. so id say talk to your dr and have the blood test done.... one more note.... once you have had Hep A i believe all other blood test from then on will read positive for it..... not it will not be active

Hepatitus A is a viral illness with fever nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms, followed by jaundice pruritus, dark urine, and pale stools
