How serious is ....esophagitis ? ( acid reflux disease )?!

Question: I ended up in the emergency room last night...I thought I was having a heart attack, my heartrate was 120 beats per minute. The emergency room done extensive tests and said I had a very healthy heart. I have indigestion on a daily basis. I was told I have esophagitis. How serious is this disease ?
Has anyone else been diagnosed or know someone who has been diagnosed with acid reflux disease ? What was your/their symptoms ? Did you/they get better after taking medication(s)?

esophagitis can lead to ulceration of the esophagus and in bad cases can lead to cancer(god forbid). long term treatment is needed by Anti -histamine type 2 and acid pumps inhibitors.
but THE most important thin is You need to modifiy your food intake habits avoid ( tomato , kitchup , spice food , pepsi , beer , garlic , onion ) and of u feel a hurt burn just drink Cold milk,
use high pillows.
when u feel a pain in ur lungs that is due to pain in the esophphagus, i am suffering like you ,, but useing medications and having alkali food can prevent bad symptoms and promote healing.

I know that an estophagus is in your neck to see how much liquid you can hold if you don't swallow any, but maybe thats not the answer to your question sorry.

Yes, had that a lot. For awhile there, every time I swallowed, I felt like I had a lump in my throat. I started taking prevacid. It took awhile to work, but it finally helped. I probably should be on it now, but I have other meds now, and can't afford them all.

I'm not sure how serious it is, really. I've heard of people who died of throat cancer, but not sure if it's really related. I just know I want my body to be in the best shape it can be.

I have GERD and it can be very serious. The worst thing is if it goes untreated and doesn't get better it can lead to esop cancer. The good news is follow diet and meds properly and you can begin to get relief quickly and it may go away. The symptoms are various and yes the heart attack scare is one of the worst. Hang in there, don't eat spicey,hot,greasy foods for a while and take your meds. Prop yourself up a bit when you go to bed and don't over eat. Smaller portions really help.

i have it and used to take prilosec sp? its serious and you my need to change your diet. It can cause cancer if you dont treat it or take care of it. not to worry though its not as bad as it sounds

symptoms are probably difficulty swallowing, it is basically the movement of food backwards from the stomach to the mouth.
General measures include:

* Weight reduction
* Avoiding lying down after meals
* Sleeping with the head of the bed elevated
* Taking medication with plenty of water
* Avoiding dietary fat, chocolate, caffeine, peppermint (they may cause lower esophageal pressure)
* Avoiding alcohol and tobacco

Five years ago I ended up in the ER after having an esophageal spasm. I also thought I was having a heart attack. I had the tests etc.

Later I realized I'd done this to myself. I bent over to tie my shoe and swallowed a mouthful of peanut butter sandwich. Really stupid!

It mostly healed but I now have to deal with Acid Reflux. I can take over the counter prilosec. I don't need the heavy dose at this time. I take it if I feel symptoms coming on.

I do what my doctor recommended. No caffeine. It relaxes the esophageal valve. No smoking because nicotine also relaxes the esophageal valve and of course it causes more stomach acid. (I got rid of daily heartburn just by giving up coffee, caffeinated teas, and Pepsi).

I don't lie down for at least an hour after I eat. I seem to be able to eat whatever I want but I eat reasonable portions.
If I pig out on something, I will pay for it with heartburn.

Here's a place to start reading about it. You should do a websearch on: GERD and acid reflux disease.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastroesophageal...

I'm fine and you will be too.
