Question about tonsillitis?!

Question: Hi,

I just been told i've got tonsillitis and so have been prescribed some penicillin to take for a couple of weeks. The Dr said the penicillin may take a few days to kick in but my mouth is painfully sore and my glands are really swollen. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i could use as a temporary relief so i can drink fluids and eat soft foods. At the moment i can't even swallow my own saliva without screaching in agony

Cheers

To help with the infection itself (in addition to the penicillin!), gargle with warm, salty water. Tastes vile, but it helps. You may also want to get something with benzocaine in it that you can spray on your throat and mouth to help with the pain, such as Chloraseptic. If you are able to get something containing codeine (such as Tylenol 3) and are not allergic to it, that may help as well; if you have to have a prescription, most doctors are quite willing to prescribe a couple of days' worth to help you through the worst of the pain. Other than that, drink LOTS of liquid; since you have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection, you should be ok to take aspirin or ibuprofen for the swelling.

You can garggle with warm water+ salt. It really helps soothe the pain.
i've heard from a friend that since its already sore sometimes it helps to have a glass of cold water.

gargle with salt water or disprin. Try a glass of coke as it removes the gunk
