Doctors will pretty much know if you are hypothyroid before giving you medication. Plus, they will test you every 6 weeks at first. The dosage is started out very low and moves up slowly until the proper dosage is found. If you don't need it, you will find out relatively quickly. Symptoms that you are on too much or shouldn't be on it are nervousness, excessive sweating, fast heart rate, diarrhea, and weight loss.

Remember to test first thing in the morning each and every time you test. It's the only way to get a good comparision, as TSH changes throughout the day. It's highest at night, so you want to test first thing in the morning near its high point.

you should never take a hormone to fix a problem unless you're sure the problem exsists. A simple blood test can diagnose hyperthyroidism. Taking a hormone when you might not need does indeed affect the body negatively.
