Does a burst of Prednisone make you gain weight?!

Question: Had a severe asthma attack and was given 60mg of prednisone the first day, then 50mg for 5 days. Now I'm weening off of it. It's been 10 days so far and I've gained at least 5 pounds. I have another week of pills and am starting to get worried.

Taking prednisone can definitely make you gain weight even if you're using it for a short time. Prednisone causes a bigger appetite as well as more thirst, both of which can lead to weight gain. If you have been very thirsty because of it, the weight will probably come off once you stop taking it. It's probably just water weight. For the remainder of your treatment, just watch your diet and make sure you aren't eating more than usual.

Shouldn't. It usually takes a long-term course to cause weight gain.

it's possible. it can also make you eat more.

While is doesn't in most people remember that everyone is different. What causes weight gain in one person may cause loss in another and not even affect the third. This said remember that prednisone done tend to have a significant affect on water retention. Stay away from diet sodas and excess salt. Watch your dietary intake to make sure that you are not over eating and if necessary ask your physician for a medication to help rid your body of excess water to see if that is the issue, always remembering to fully discuss the issue before hand with the MD. Also maintain an exercise program designed to either maintain your present weight or loss weight. I hope that you feel better soon.
