Do I need to get antibiotics?!

Question: I have been off work since Friday with a cold that seems to have gone to my chest. I am coughing up green stuff (sorry, I know that's really gross!) - is it likely to go away by itself or do I need to go and get some antibiotics?

If so, could I go to an NHS walk-in centre for this if I can't get a doctor's appointment today?

Green sputum is an indication of a bacterial infection which is treated by antibiotics. See a dr asap, so you can start feeling better soon.

If you're coughing up 'green stuff' then, yes you may need antibiotics. Yes, go to the walk in centre.

Go to walk in centre

yes a course of antibiotics is needed

hi
usually if the colour of what your coughing up turns from clear to green it can mean that you might have an infection, its best to get it checked out just go along to you nhs walk in centre and they should sort you out.

No, you definately DON'T need antibiotics.

If you've got a cold then anti-biotics won't do anything at all:

A cold is a virus.

Anti-biotics treat illnesses caused by baceria.

Bacteria illnesses and virus illnesses are two completely different things; indeed, using anti-biotics against a viral infection (like a cold) helps the cold virus become resistant to the drugs and can help cause the virus to develop into a superbug.

That's a bit drastic hopefully explains why anti-biotics would be inneffective against your cold!

Go and see the doctor if you're worried, but I'm afraid he (or she) won't give you ABs :)

i would if were you.

it won't go away like this. you need an expectorant containing ambroxol and dextromethorphan with cetrizine for running nose.

Hi

You should go and see your G.P yes Antibiotics does help with chesty coughs but you better get it seen too.
