Does coughing damage your vocal chords?!
Question: I've been coughing almost non-stop since Friday and my voice is pretty much gone. I can't talk above a whisper. I was just wondering if this excessive coughing would permenatly damage my vocal chords. I am a singer, which is the main reason I'm asking..
~thanks

Probably won't cause permanent damage, but it'll sure make them swollen. Try not to talk for a few days unless you have to, take some anti-inflammatories and stay hydrated. You should be just fine in a week!
Yes. Eventually. Chicken noodle soup and honey.
No, coughing involves tissue above the cords, and to prove this to yourself, just cough a little if you can stand it, then make the tiniest singing sound, and you will feel how much lower your cords are ...you can feel the two different areas really well .....in any case, take good care of yourself, do not underestimate the importance of resting, staying warm, and getting yourself all better before you sing
again.
