I'm going to speak from experience here, as I too suffer from serious anxiety and panic attacks.
Firstly-dont take xanax, pills do NOT solve the problem, they mask it.
Secondly, are you on any form of hormonal contraceptive? I have been for the last 7 years and only recently did I come off it, and it has made the world of difference. The doctors said it wouldnt, but I have done my own research, and anxiety/panic attacks can be caused by hormonal imbalances, induced by the pill/patch/shot.
Thirdly, have you had any therapy? My doctor was trying to give me anti-depressants for the last 3 years, and finally I put my foot down and said I'm not taking them I need therapy to SOLVE my problem.
I have now begun cognitive behavioural therapy, it's a long process, but they understand how you are feeling, and dont judge you when you tell them your problems-I have to carry around a plastic bag, extra strong mints, and a bottle of water with me wherever I go as I was left untreated for so long it developed nto sick phobia, on topn of the rest of it!
do you feel like your throat is closing in?-cup your hands over your mouth and take deep breaths-your body has too much oxygen in its system due to hyperventilating, so you can get more co2 back into your body.
Write a detailed diary-get things off your chest, this is therapy in itself.
I have been told to make myself some cue cards so if I feel panicky or anxious I can take the cards out of my bag and concentrate on them
Also, write down your exact thoughts when you are panicking/anxious. write down the situation, your exact thoughts, believability of the 'bad' thing you think will happen on a scale of 1%-100%, and how you calmed yourself down.
I am only in the early stages of therapy, but it really is helping me.I hope this has helped (sorry its so long!)

You might want to check out fhu.com, for emotional factors pertaining to it.

that is terrible. but I do think something is causing this reaction within you (something that happened to you, that you have put out of your mind, it could be painful). if you could just find out what is really bothering you, then you could deal with it, bring it out in the open. I would seek therapy, to see if you can pinpoint the actual incident that lead to this reaction... good luck hon

You should check with your health provider and get a better explanation of "Anxiety" and, "panic" attacks.
Most people today in our society, along with the "push" in our society for better working conditions, work itself, family life and, all it entails, kids and raising a family. All this results in anxiety. There's nothing wrong with having panic attacks, it's the way you handle it. The same is true with anxiety. You have a grip on it now with Xanax, that's a start. Apparently you've taken the first step, now follow through.

You must have seen a Doctor to have been prescribed your meds, have they just left it at that?

You need counsellings to overcome the issue that is causing them in the first place.

Initially they would explain what a panic attack is, and reassure you that whatever you think could/would happen is unlikely.

They would explain whats happening to your body, the fight or flight reaction your going through.

Ask about past experiences traumatic experiences so they can build up a picture of the problems that is casing them, and then move onto dealing with the issues gently and in a controlled situation.

Normally a councilor would try to desensitize you to the trigger of the attacks over a period of time building each exposure up to a point you felt tolerable.

Its not a quick process but in order to overcome the anxiety attacks it needs to be done.

Please speak to your Doctor and get a referral to to help for this as pills will only ease the symptoms its unlikely to cure the problem.

Take care.

I don`t think anxiety or panic attacks are a true mental illness, but rather the results of some former traumatic occurrence in the past. The stresses of everyday living, such as work, unstable home life, illness can cause one to feel anxious. Panic attacks can be brought on by the fear of heart attack or some other imminent danger whether real or imagined. Both can be eased by counseling and medication and one can continue to live a somewhat normal life once they understand the causes of these attacks.
