Tarnished silver earrings?!

Question: I bought silver earrings a while back and after i wore the earrings just once, i noticed that the piece that you stick through your ear was badly tarnished??

I cleaned them before i wore them but when i took them out to dry they were tarnished?

I am starting to wonder why my ears start to itch like crazy when i wear them? could i be allergic to the silver, because i have no problems wearing gold earrings?

The silver is probably mixed with nickel which makes most people irritated. Gold is a purer metal with less reaction. If you want a silver look without the tarnishing and sensitivity problem, then white gold would be a good fit. Pricey, but well worth it as it does not get tarnished.

Some of us can only wear gold or platinum-clad metals.

allergic to the silver need see ear dr

are they cheap or expensive earrings... cheap silver earrings make my ears itch sometimes... if i buy nicer earrings they dont itch- not expensive earrings...just ones that are a little nicer- like $20 dollars or so compared to like $3....

Some silver earrings have nickel in them, and it is a common allergen in earrings. It is common, and can come on suddenly. I wore cheap earrings for about 20 years, then one day, !boom! I started reacting to nickel. Redness, itching, and feeling "hot" are all symptoms.

If you have earwires, replace them with surgical steel or other 'hypo-allergenic" wires. If they are posts, I've seen little plastic "sleeves" you can slip over the posts - but you may need to trade the backs for non silver ones.

you could be allergic to silver or one of the alloys in the earrings ... you could also be having a reaction to the by-products of tarnish ... tarnishing is a chemical change in the metal caused by air or whatever else it comes in contact with ...

try a better cleaning process or put a protective layer of nail polish over that area of the earring and see if it helps ...
