Numbness due to diabetes?!

Question: I have diabetes(for 15 yrs now), I am 35, and on novulin 70/30. MY feet look great, I am slightly overweight and am under a Doctors care. I am having trouble keeping my sugars low, and we are trying to decide about using a pump for the insulin. I am insulin resistant. The most recent problem is numbness in my feet, along the outside (pinky toe area). I am also getting some pains in the calves... I am 20 pounds overweight and I know that if I lose it I will be better off but this pain (mot liekly nerve damage) is affecting my sleep pattern... and I wont be able to be seen by my DR til the 26th. Is there anything out there to help me for this pain. I am currently taking extra strenght tylenol and tylenol pm without relief. If you know of something else, possibly over the counter, please let me know. It is getting worse, and I am in tears over it.

I am 24 and have had type one diabetes since I was 11. I have some early signs of neuropathy and numbness in my feet (not much). If I am not taking care of myself, I am sick, of for whatever reason my sugar is high, I get sharp pains and cramps in my calves and feet. Especially the ones in my feet, cause me to wake up in the middle of the night. However I noticed when my sugar is back under control the pains almost go away completely. My best friend in high school (also a type one diabetic since she was 14) has the same thing. She lost health insurance and couldn't afford her prescriptions, when here sugar was high she got the sharp pains in her calves and feet, when she got better control with her sugars, the pains went away. So my suggestion is to try to keep your sugars under control as best as you can until you see your doctor. I took Ibuprofen, that might help you a little bit better, but I think getting your sugars as close to normal will help the most. I just went on a Insulin Pump about a year ago and have had no pains in my feet or calves since my sugar have been better. I would take Ibuprofen, limit carbohydrate(to reduce the risk of high blood sugar) and try to lower your blood sugars while you wait to see your doctor.

Has your doctor suggested Lyrica? Call and see if he'll call in a prescription so you can get started on it now.

fellow diabetic...i have the same symptoms..for yrs..its call ''neuroprathy''..cant spell..my feet are a little discolored and i have virtually no feelings on part of my feet...this not good..i get cuts and dont even feel it...a year ago iwas on insulin and glyboride..my insulin was ''r''...go to the doctors..because the numbness is irreversable..i now take nothing..i am diabetic clear...i QUIT all the qrong foods..anything we take turns to sugar..change your diet...please

Cymbalta is being used with some success for Diabetic neuropathy. Not much helps numbness. Tell your doctor about the pain. If walking brings it on, and rest relieves it, you may have trouble with circulation. If nothing helps but sitting down, you may have a spinal problem. If they are tender, you may have a clot. Get checked.

your problem is probably diabetic neuropathy. it is irreversible. There is nothing to help with this that is otc as far as i know. your best bet would be to get into your doctor earlier. both lyrica and gabapentin(neurontin) can be used to treat it. lyrica is a narcotic, but gabapentin does have some nasty side effects. You need to change your diet to keep your blood sugars down. You may need to add novolin r as coverage before meals if your sugars continue to run high. get into your doctor asap tho.
