Get a new doctor. "You're fired" would be a good thing to tell him. There are a lot of "C" students out there. Any blood pressure over 140 / 80 should be a concern and especially at your age, if this was your resting BP.

I wouldn't run out like a lot of people and get BP medication though. I would take a serious look at your diet and get check by someone who understands how the body works. I don't believe your GP does. When the blood vessels are constricted, like a tube you squeeze, this can cause the pressure to build. I'd like to know what "symptoms" the doctor is talking about. Most people with high blood pressure don't feel any symptoms.

Your body could be under some large stresses that are causing this. If you drink lots of energy drinks, take drugs, etc. this should be suspect.

There are a lot of nutritional things you can do to help this, but realize that high blood pressure is due to nutritional deficiencies. I would seek out a good Certified Nutritional Therapist who can sort out the diet issue and determine the exact deficiency you have, not a dietitian or doctor to solve this for you. They will just give you drugs.

good luck.

Holy mother of christ, get to a doctor quick.

that is very high. You should get a second opinion. You could also check some other websites like webmd.com or mayoclinic.com.
best of health to you!

Seems high BUT it may be white coat syndrome and the lower figure is correct

I'm no doctor but the 90 sounds good, but 160 does sound quite high.

my dad just came out of hospital yesterday (high blood pressure) but when he gets up it drops to low to 160 ? how can that be high. anyway they let him out and now he's fine and on the way to california with the doctors blessing.

find another doctor - the problem with high bp is that there are no symptoms ; where did your doctor train?
For good ness sake I hope you do not drink or smoke and avoid fatty food like the plague. oh and get your cholesterol checked

It is high, especially for an athletic person, but if this is the first time it's been high it could be due to anything; "white-coat anxiety", coffee, walking to the doctors office, pizza etc.... In order to be diagnosed with hypertension you need three readings of high pressure at three different appointments. If you are asymptomatic ( no headache, blurred vision, palpitations) then relax and don't worry, get your pressure checked again in a few weeks and it will probably be normal.

Hi, I am 64 and at a recent check-up my blood pressure was 160/90. The doctor said it was a bit high and advised that I take a low dose of statins and diuretics [permanently]. My blood pressure is now around 130/75. I can't say I feel any different, but then I didn't feel unwell to start with.

You need a new doctor. Both your systolic (the first number) and diastolic (the second number) pressures are high. Any systolic pressure >= 140 is high, and any diastolic number >= 90 is okay. Of course there are no symptoms! Hypertension generally has no symptoms, particularly at your age. Please get a second opinion. Untreated hypertension can lead to a variety of problems including stroke, kidney disease, and congestive heart failure.

Oh my days, why can't people just trust their doctors. If he is your GP he will have been through AT LEAST 7 years of training and so I think he knows what he's talking about. If you're that worried go back and talk to him about it, ask him why your BP is so high and that might calm your worries.
