Endoscopy: better to have it done via a spray without sedation or better with se!

Question: My mum's got an endoscopy soon, and in the letter, it says she can either have a spray and stay awake or a sedative. She doesn't know which to choose.

Answers: My mum's got an endoscopy soon, and in the letter, it says she can either have a spray and stay awake or a sedative. She doesn't know which to choose.

Many endoscopic procedures are considered to be relatively painless and, at worst, associated with mild discomfort; for example, in esophagogastroduodenoscopy, most patients tolerate the procedure with only topical anesthesia of the oropharynx using lignocaine spray.

The sedative most commonly used is Versed - which is a light fast-acting sedative that will leave your Mum with little or no memory of the procedure; however she can respond to the Doctor's questions during the procedure, ( she will not feel any discomfort). I've had many "scopes" - all using versed, (injected into my IV), and I was very happy with how things worked: - no after surgery sickness, groggyness cleared up right away upon waking, time in Post-0p was usually about 1 hour. (Plus I like the fact that I did not have to be awake while whatever was being done was done, and I did not have to listen to the Doctor's & nurses chatter, - I was asleep and comfortable, and that was fine with me.

Sedative, always better, she will still be conscious but wont remember anything as its not that nice of an experience.

I had an endo in the doctors outpatient procedure room. I was given a mild tranqulizer, and it was nothing, Not painful or anything. I was awake and the doctor was showing me things on the screen. I would recommend it this way if she is not one to panic during a medical procedure.

I had one done 6 months ago. I opted for a sedative but when I got there I was told that if I had the spay I could go home within 20 mins and if I had the sedative I would have to stay for a few hours. So I changed my mind and decided to have the spray. Unfortunately it turned out that i couldn't have it as its banana flavoured and I am allergic. So I had it done with out anything. To be totally honest I am glad I did, there really is not anything to worry about. A nurse was with me and talked to me the whole time. It was over and done with in minutes and I got the results and went home. I was there less than 30minutes and I thought it was going to be most of the day in the day surgery unit. If your mum is worried go for the spray.

sedation.......................

better without sedative. it's not painful & with sedation she'd have to hang around. if she's anything like me, she'll be glad to get out of the place!

if it was me i would take the spray.she is going to be groggy all day from the sedative.if she is nervouse the nurse will hold her hand they always do to make you feel more comfortable and she will.she will be able to drive herself home better also instead of waiting a period of time.

I guess it depends on if they are going to just scope or take a biopsy or anything else while they are down there. If it were me and I have had it done TWICE sedation sedation sedation...you don't have to stick around for that long after the procedure you just need someone to drive you home.

I chose the sedative...had the endoscopy done at 1.00pm and was shopping with my friend round Tesco's at 3.00pm/ She will need someone else to drive and possibly advised not to be on her own for 24 hours.
The spray is OK provided you can swallow tubes without "gagging".
