H5N1, full name A/chicken/Nakorn-Patom/Thailand/CU-K2/04... is a problem, but I would not panic yet despit what is below:
Seriously, it is a major health problem, but the response of health authorities to dead birds is to rigorously check them.
The fact that it mutates is no big deal in that all types of influenza are highly protean, and it does not pass easily between humans. Human deaths have occurred in NE Africa and the Horn of Africa, Turkey, China, PNG, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Viet Nam and ?Syria. Birds have died in all these countries, and many more.
The Americas and Australia and Pacific nations have had no known exposure as of December.
The H5N1 is just another form of influenza that has been around for a very very very long time. This is all how nature works, it's nothing that hasn't happened before, the world is not going to come to an end.
