Sometimes. You have to read the label and look for words like fructose, sucrose, other -ose. Sucralose is splenda, so that's not sugar, although it's made from sugar.

I believe diet soda is ok, if you can stand it. Watch the caffeine, though, because that can cause problems of it's own, and not just staying awake.

For other things than soda, like jelly or syrup or ketchup, Walden Farms is really sugar free, fat free, carb free and calorie free. The pancake syrup is really good, the chocolate syrup tastes good but it's very thin, and the balsamic vinagrette dressing is wonderful. Baste chicken in it, really good. Pricey, but good, and worth it to me.

Check the label. Make sure that the sweetener used is really a sugar substitute.

It depends on the product. With most products "sugar free" doesn't mean carb free. But diet coke really is carb free. Just look at the nutrition label. If it doesn't have any carbs, than you're safe diabetes wise. The only thing that could be a concern is sodium if you're supposed to watch your salt. But you would have to drink a lot of soda for the sodium in it to make a difference. I give my 2 year old diabetic daughter soda all the time, since she gets so few treats. So enjoy!

Yes, your above responder is correct. I always get the caffeine free stuff, I didn't think to mention it.

You should try Diet Dr Pepper, it's the best tasting out of all the diets. And they make a caffeine free version too. Also diet A&W is pretty good too.

Yes - diet coke is ok :) Basically sweeteners are kinds of sugars that we cannot metabolise, so we don't break them down they just go right through us! They're still sugar but they won't affect your blood sugars so you can eat them. Most of them are based on compounds that plants use to keep the right amounts of water within their cells! Watch out though - there is a difference between 'sugar free' and 'no added sugar' - things with no added sugar can still contain natural sugar, eg. fresh fruit juice can say 'no added sugar' on it but it is still v high in sugar and will affect your bloods a lot!! If you're unsure check the label for carbs/sugars - for a drink, if it's got less than 2g carbs/sugars per 100mls then it won't really affect your bloods at all.

Hope that helps xx

It is totally illegal to put sugar in something then claim it is sugar free.

Diet cokes have synthetic sweeteners in them.

My favorite drinks are those I make: adding a little tart fruit flavoring to water or carbonated water! A teaspoon of fruit juice in a 8-ounce glass of water isn't much, but it does help make the water easier on the palate.

Some "sugar free" things have sugar alcohols in them which can cause digestive upsets!! Use these in extreme moderation if at all.
