Remind the receptionist that she is not the doctor.
There is something about receptionists at doctors surgery's that seems to make them think that they have trained in medicine and are fit to judge people. it appears to be universal, i think that if you have the energy to get past the damned receptionist then you don't need a doctor.

baseball bat. ?

sorry, i do not condone baseball bat violence.

Couldnt you just call and say " may i speak to doctor "whoever" please?"

when she asks who it is say " Oh , my name is mr /miss, bla bla"

she may just connect you. If not tell her the nature of the call and that you require call back.

Couldnt you go to A&E?

Your blood pressure is very high, and if you're feeling unwell ring NHS Direct NOW for more advice. If you get no luck from them, go to A&E. This needs immediate attention.

You should probably go to an urgent care. You'll still havta wait but i'm pretty sure they will help right then and there.

Ask to see the nurse, they can get you in to see a doctor pretty quick - it always works for me. If its really urgent, phone NHS Direct 0845 46 47.

Go to A& E and tell them you need urgent attention. The lower figure is too high. I did this (after getting blurred vision in one eye) and had a load of tests the GP wouldn't have been able to do and was put onto medication to bring down the BP fairly quickly. Don't be put off - hypertension is a serious complaint and needs dealing with promptly. You pay for all this with your taxes -you are entitled to treatment as and when you need it.

It's an awful thing to suggest, but if you are really poorly and can't wait tell the receptionist that you need to see a doctor that day and if it can't happen could you arrange for a home visit. It's amazing how appointments often then become available. If you're not happy with the service you can complain to the Family Practioner's Committee - ask the receptionist for the details.

If you state it is an emergency and that you must be seen today, virtually all Dr Surgerys have set number of "emergency sessions" per day. You will get in.... Do not take NO for an answer

My doctors surgery is the same, some receptionists think they can play God in giving out the appointments, you have to be firm and dont tell them whats wrong its none of there business, tell them you need to speak to a doctor and if they cant give you an appointment then you want the doctor to call you, usually i find this works and i get one of the above. I dont know if its the same at your surgery but i can phone in the morning and they have to give you an emergency appointment for the same day, i thought this was the new rules for every doctor anyway, dont let some receptionist that hasnt got a clue tell you that you have to wait, also if you speak to the nurse they can usually get a doctors appointment for you, dont let your health suffer any more because of some receptionist, you are entitled to an emergency same day appointment. good luck andf get well soon xx

tell them you have chest pain, it will give you priority and as your BP is so high you really shouldget attention for it

I would say go to the emergency room. Your blood pressure is way too high. After that, I'd find another doctor. Usually, if the receptionist is being that picky with the appointments, it's the DOCTOR'S doing. I used to work in a dental office. If the doctor didn't want to give that particular appointment out for whatever reason, he let the receptionist know that morning before patients arrive. So don't blame the receptionist.
