Diabetics, who are not in good control, are prone to reduced circulation in the foot, a reduced ability to fight infection, and nerve damage.

The nerve damage reduces sensation and can allow for an injury (cut, scrape, burn) to go unfelt. The cut/scrape/burn is then more likely to become infected.

Diabetic Foot Care includes making sure circulation to the feet is not strained any further than necessary (no tight socks), making sure the foot is protected at all times (shoes/slippers). Doing daily inspections of the feet for any wounds. Keeping the foot moisturized.

Massage may help increase circulation in the feet, but a diabetic should get the advice of their chiropodist/podiatrist about any foot related regimen to make sure it is right for the individual patient.

Basically preventive maintenance. Keep your nails trimmed, use comfortable shoes to avoid calluses, pay careful attention to cuts, blisters and sores to avoid infections and generally keep them in pristine condition to prevent the development of complications which can be devastating. Use common sense.
