As the poster above said, the ADA diet will harm you more than help you.

I am a newly diagnosed diabetic at 42 (Type II). By adhering to the 6-12-12 diet and some exercise, you can do very well and not even need medication.

The diet simply means eating no more than 6 grams of carbs for breakfast and no more than 12 apiece for lunch and supper.

Eat a good amount of protein, but don't overdo it. Also, use fats to make sure you feel full. But, the fats you should use are butter, coconut oil and olive oil. Other fats to various degrees are okay as well. Green leafy vegetables are okay as well.

Please check out Dr. Richard Bernstein's website (www.diabtetes-book.com) for more information. Or you can check out the Protein Power website by Dr. Eades or the website by Dr. Mercola.

Again. Give up the carbs.

The American Diabetic Association covers this well in their site, below.

Exercise a little every single day of your life. Walk up and down the stairs if you have to for exercise. Exercise and healthy muscle helps your body use the free insulin already in your body, so that your body will take care of itself. Now this does NOT mean that you won't need insulin or pills, it just means that you may need less over time if you stick with the exercise.
Also, please PLEASE adhere to the ADA diet. It works.

Eat healthy (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats... avoid processed foods

Get enough exercise... try to get 30 minutes of cardio AT LEAST 3 times per week

Keep track of your insulin levels

The ADA diet is not good for most type 2 diabetics!!! It contains many too many grams of carb for us to have a healthy lifestyle.

Try Atkins Diabetes Revolution for information book! Not expensive and answers lots and lots of questions.

Exercise every day! Check glucose levels frequently and try to keep them as close to 100 as you possibly can. Eat healthy meats and veggies!! Do not worry about the starchy, grains, cereals and desserts. No one really needs them!! And finally learn to journal!!

Keeping track of the hours, foods, meds, and exercise is a good thing. It can help you to spot trends in your treatment.
