How can i get rid of this congestion in my chest?!

Question: I have had this cough for over 2 weeks now. And I did have the whole sinus thing going on too. I have not had a fever, no bathroom troubles, no stomach problems, just the head and chest. I went to the doctor, and he said it was viral, and gave me a decongestant and said to take it as needed. And he gave me an antibotic and said not to start it, unless the cough has not stoped. Well It hasn't stopped with taking just the congestent, I was hoping there was something else I could do before turning to the antibotic. The cough is not as bad as it was, But that nasty suff just don't wanna all cough out. Any suggestions?

First of all, there's a wicked cough/cold thing going around. Three people in my home had it. It lasts over 2 weeks, and there ain't too many symptoms involved. My first advice is to use Vicks vapor rub on your throat and chest. Antibiotics won't help if it's viral anyways, Take the decongestant and use some Hall's cough drops. You'll just have to ride it out, my friend! Good Luck!!

As your dr. if you can take Mucinex-it's a chest expectorant. Or talk to him/her about perscribing something for it. I'm surprised they didn't give you anything for it so it doesn't lead to pneumonia.

I have had the same thing (usually once every year) or something similar to it.
Nothing worked.

However, I traveled to Germany one Christmas and stayed with family. I had the COUGH and they sent me a doctor where I received a perscription for some type of hot licorice tea product. I drank it every couple of hours and it worked like a charm!! I've even had them send it to me from Germany.
It is called: Bronchialtee and is made by a company called Heumann. I've seen it on the internet and you don't need an American perscription for it as it is a natural remedy.

I've recommend licorice tea to my friends who have had similar complaints and they loved the results. You can get an American version of it at most natural health stores. Don't put sugar or milk in it and drink it every few hours. I'm sure it will work for you, but the dosage may not be as strong as the german version.

get well soo!

To be honest guaifenesin (Mucinex) is not really that good at helping a chesty cough, take something with carbocistine instead it helps break down mucous so you can cough it up; take with plenty of water and take the antibiotic if the stuff you cough up is green or yellow. Don't take carbocistine within 3 hours of going to bed as it will keep you up all night

For spasmodic coughing I've read that chamomile tea, coltsfoot tea,and juniper berries/tea helps.

Mucinex=guafenesin, an expectorant. It will thin the mucus, make your cough more productive but less frequent.
Drink lots of water; tea with lemon & honey; Vit C 2000mg every 2 hours.; gargle with very warm salt water 3-4X/day; gargle with hydrogen peroxide it will feel weird because it bubbles a lot. Suck on Zinc lozenges.

Feel better soon.
