I had a double heart bypass three years ago.?!

Question: What are the odds on my needing another one if I continue smoking. I need a correct answer not just a guess.

Answers: What are the odds on my needing another one if I continue smoking. I need a correct answer not just a guess.

There are a few variables to consider:
1 What types of grafts were used artery grafts last longer than vein grafts.
2 What are your other risk factors for heart disease and are they well controlled.
3 How old are you and are you likely to die before the grafts get diseased.

Vein grafts last up to about 10 years if well looked after. However smoking would halve that figure. Artery grafts about 15 years and again smoking will approximately halve this.

Main risk factors to consider are high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Obesity is a risk factor but is not as strong as smoking and the other three. The other major risk factor is genetics but you can't do much about that.

I suppose the best answer is that if very carefully looked after, you would expect a bypass to last some 10-15 yrs but smoking and other risk factors will drastically reduce this.

I am well aware that it is horribly easy to start smoking and often for many people very difficult to stop. The answer is very clear, however, that you do need to do all that is in your power to stop.

Best of luck.

the nhs should not give you treament a second time if you continue to smoke.
what a waste of money your first one would have been

if you continue smoking after all the advise from your medics to cease smoking then you are stupid I am surprised that having had a bypass operation anyone would be arrogant enough to even ask Give up smoking or suffer the consequences If you continue to smoke it is playing russian roulette with a loaded gun you may not get the chance to have another bypass

Cholesterol does NOT cause CHD

SMOKING DOES. by lowering nitric oxide levels and damaging the lining of the arteries. And an elevated blood pressure will and STRESS will

My answer is yes you will need to have something done to your heart if you keep smoking and doing the things that got you there in the first place so quit smoking

The odds are pretty high.

You should have quit as soon as you found out you needed the surgery.

Smoking? What a complete bonehead thing to do! I tried it when I was 21, and when I inhaled I coughed, got light-headed and dizzy. My question was and is, why in the hell would I want to do this? Spending extra money to kill yourself. You might as well put a gun to your head.

The chances are VERY HIGH the best thing to do is stop now
