Can you die from having Diabetes?!

Question: I searched Google on diabetes but it only tells you the symptoms but doesn't say what will happen to you drastically with diabetes. Anybody have an idea? My friend has diabetes but he keeps ignoring it and eats sweets all the time.

Yes, you certainly can die from diabetes. First of all, if you are on insulin, your blood sugar can go too low because of the insulin. This is called hypoglycemia. The effects of low blood sugar can be very fast if you don't eat some sugar quickly when you realize that you are going low and going too low can give you seizures, put you into a coma, or kill you in the worst case. I don't know your friend's situation and he/she certainly shouldn't be eating sugar all the time, but he/she will need sugar (candy, juice, something to get they sugar fast) immediately if they go too low. (This is assuming that they are on insulin.

One can also die if they go too high. This is called hyperglycemia. That can take much longer to kill you than low blood sugar. When you have high blood sugar for a long period of time (before I was diagnosed I had had very high blood sugar for at least 3 months prior to going to the ER and I had ketoacidosis as a result of this, but I was lucky enough to have had none of the life-threatening problems that I listed here) you can lose your limbs, go blind, have heart problems (which can kill you), have kidney problems (which can kill you), etc. This is why he/she shouldn't eat candy all the time, because it will spike her blood sugar. It will also cause the blood sugar to drop quickly afterwards if insulin is being taken. It is important for a diabetic to stay in the middle range, not too high and not too low.

So, yeah, your friend should try and take care of themself and not eat sweets all the time, but also make sure you understand that he/she will need to eat sweets once in a while (if she is taking insulin).

Yes, you certainly can. If lucky, you will just go into coma and die. If not, you will go blind first, have painful neuropathy so you cannot walk without pain, or at all; your kidneys will fail,
and so will your heart. If lucky, you'll just have a heart attack and die on the spot. If not, you will be in congestive failure so you cannot do anything that requires any effort. It is not a good way to go. Tell your friend about this, and beg her to get religion. Doctors can only do so much. They rely on their patients to follow instructions.

Yes, you can.

Diabetes kills thousands of people every year! It is a manageable disease but if not taken care of will become life threatening. Blindness and loss of limbs usually feet and legs are some things that can happen. Check wikipedia or webmd.com. Good Luck

yes you can die from diabetes.. you have to watch your diet.. you have to stay away from sugar.. check your blood glucose levels and watch your carbs.. my little boy is diabetic.. he is on insulin.. he is only 8 yea rs old.. we found out when he was 7 years old.. he counts his carbs eats splenda instead of sugar.. and can give his own insulin.. (we work together on everything..I am so proud of him,.. your friend could put himself into a coma.. too much sugar.. or no food.. has to check blood sugars .. follow doctors orders ,, it is no joke.. serious..

yes if diabetes is unmanaged it can lead to a diabetic coma and you can die. also its important to manage it as if affects your eyesight and liver. diabetics also have to be very carefull with there feet as they are suseptical to gang green. i would advise your friend to not ignore the doctors advise its a very serious illness

Yes you can, The first answer pretty much told you all the info but on top of that you can use you legs/arms if it gets bad enough. It is a dangerous condition!

YES if not taken care of he is taking a chance on dieing if it gets really high he could have abad stroke or heart attack their is so many problem that can happen like losing a llimb and like my son he is going blind from it and he is so young so tell him he better wake up and take care of it or he will not be here long or he could be crippled

If your friend has diabetes and "eats sweets all the time" then he/she is just asking for death. although your friend feels healthy now in a year or two your friend will be in the hospital getting ripped off by the doctors and feeling miserable. then your friend might understand sweets could spell death if eaten "all the time".

Your friend can eat sweets but blood glucose levels should be maintained below 120 mg/dl. He should monitor his glucose levels mutiple times a day. Consistent high blood sugar levels take a while to catch up but the risks include blindness, nerve damage, liver & kidney failure....the list goes on. Your friend ignores his diabetes at great peril.

Left uncontrolled and ignored, diabetes can cause irreversible brain damage, kidney damage, blindness, circulation damage that can require amputation of the feet. Then, eventually, death.

I'm not kidding. It's serious.

What you die from is usually the things diabetes can cause. Like kidney disease, heart disease, a great number of diseases. Your friend needs some serious help

i have diabetes mellitus[insulin dependant] and you can die from not controlling your sugar levels ketoacids attack your main organs and cause irreversible damage if not controlled properly tell your friend i know it can be a drag but they need to wake up and take control of their life and their sugar levels it will make a big difference to their quality of life

diabetes can not kill you itself, just the symptoms of not control;ing it can! unless hes type 2 and overweight, diabetics can pretty much eat whatetever so him eating sweets aint a problem

YES, IF YOU DO NOT TAKE CARE OF SELF AND DON'T TAKE YOUR MEDS. AND EAT HEALTH

YES.

yes you can, diabetics can only eat sugar stuff when they fell like they are going to have a hypo when sugar drops down.
so your friend might be having a hypo and not be telling you.I know when I'm at work I'm rushing in and out all day and my blood sugar drops when I'm active,so i need some thing with sugar to bring me around so i might have some chocolate or a can of coke any thing i can get to quickly, and it really pees me off when some one comments should you be having that.why should i have to explain my self to people not a lot of people understand about diabetes, and think that people can not eat sugary stuff when in fact we have to because this can also kill us.Maybe your Friend is taken to much of insulin or tablets and needs to cut down with the units.
