How do I prevent sleep paralysis / frequent nightmares?!

Question: I have a friend attending a college who recently revealed to me that certain episodes I was having were actually a condition, sleep paralysis. It was very scary to me - you can have it waking up or falling asleep, and you're just totally aware but feel immobilized... and sometimes you feel like you're going to be killed. On top of the occasional occurence of this I often have vivid nightmares that prevent me from immediately returning to sleep. I'm also mostly caucasian with a quarter hispanic - I heard it's mostly african or black people who get this, so I really don't know what's going on. If anyone knows how to stop them I would be glad to know.

Nope, race plays no part in SP. The nightmares could be because you are stressed out about something in real life. Otherwise, nightmares come and go without any meaning at all.

I have this same problem and it started about 7 years ago... I finally figured out about a year ago what was making them worse, it was lack of sleep for me.... if I went too long with inadequate sleep, it would catch up with me and I when I would start to fall asleep I would feel tingling all over me and hear loud strange noises sometimes then, when I would try to pull myself out of it, I would feel stuck in myself. Sometimes I would even think someone was in the room with me... VERY SCARY. It happened alot after each of my kids were born.
