Blood clot?!

Question: My mother was diagnosed with a blood clot tonight and is in the hospital. The Dr. said the clot was pretty much throughout her entire leg. What can I expect treatment to include. How long might she be in the hospital, and what kind of care will be required when she gets out?

your mom will probably get a drug called heparin when she's in the hospital. this should prevent the clot from getting any bigger and allow her body to break up the clot in her leg. they will keep her in the hospital for a few days to make sure she doesn't have any complications.

she will likely go home on a medicine called warfarin. this medicine is like heparin, but its more suitable for long term treatment. you mom should also try to be more physically active if possible. inactivity is a major risk factor for clots. also, if she is a smoker, she should really try to quit. smoking damages the lining of your blood vessels and makes it easier for clots to form. she will need to be on warfarin for at least six months, and her doctors may decide that she needs to be on warfarin permanently. warfarin has a lot of drug interactions, so all of her doctors should know she is taking it. she may also want to wear compression socks to keep blood from pooling in her legs.

if at any point you mom suddenly becomes short of breath, she must go to the ER. clots in her legs are a major risk factor for clots in the blood vessels of the lungs, which can be life threatening.

when someone has a blood clot they usually will put someone on a blood thinner to make sure that it will thin out. They might do a procedure to remove the clot. just depends on her situation and what the doctors feel that would be the best for your mom. Not sure about the amount of time in the hospital but they will be keeping a close watch on her to make sure everything is ok. When she gets out of the hospital they might give her some different medicine to help to prevent this from happening again.
