Itching Question. Allergic to something at bed time?!

Question: My nine year old keeps saying that she itches all over at night when she goes to sleep in her room. We have checked for bed bugs, and I have washed her sheets in different soap. I cant figure it out. Any other suggestions? Thank you for your time. Nic

Could be the mattress. See this report:

the best option is to move her from the bed to a temporary location for a few days/week. If the symptoms disappear, then you know the problem is in the bed. Then try to isolate the exact item (blanket, mattress, pillow, etc.

Think about feather pillows, duvets or dust mites. She could be allergic to one or both of these. You should take her to an allergist.

Have you changed fabric softener? Could it be fleas?

maybe its the sheets the feelling of it

You should Buy her a new bedspread...

Maybe she is telling you in a way that she has grown out of it or she doesn't like it anymore.

If it's not bed bugs, maybe it's her nightwear. Or, maybe it's a cry for attention. And of course that's not the popular answer, but it's sometimes true.

I'm allergic to bio products-
fabric softeners/washing powders...
So that's the first thing to try..

And also FEATHERS- stay away from real feather pillows and see if that helps..

maybe you might have eczema and the sheets irritate your skin

It could be so many different things but you have begun in the right direction. Does this occur when she sleeps somewhere other than her bed? Try giving her a Benadryl about 30 minutes before bedtime tonight. If this solves the problem then it is probably an allergic reaction to something in her room or bedclothes. If the problem continues, then another source would have to be found. Good luck!

hmmm...does she break out when she's in her bed? Like welts? What kind of different soap did you try? For my son who has horrible allergies I have to use Woolite, fragrance free. A soap that has nothing in it..no fragrance or any other strong chemicals..dreft is very harsh, even though for babies..don't use that, ivory is harsh too, even though it says for sensitive skin. If it's not the soap...how old is her mattress? If you don't see bites all over her, then it's not bugs. It could be that if her mattress is an older one that dust mites have taken it over...they are in everything..but in older mattress it's had more time to build up. She could be allergic to dust mites in her pillow or mattress. You can get mattress and pillow covers that are 99% affective against allergies..you can get them at walmart, but I'm not sure how good. I had to get my son's through the allergist. But just to try it out...get the cheaper ones and see if that makes a difference...you can also buy pillows already allergen free..no feather pillows! And get some very very gentle detergent and wash her sheets in hot water every other day..I know that's a lot, but that's also what I have to do..this helps keep the dust mites down..even if you have the special covers over mattress and pillows, dust mites are going to be there, this just reduces them. Good luck. I hope this helps.

Fungus, don't wash clothes with the bathroom rug.
