PICC Line?!

Question: I have scars from the PICC lines i've had inserted.
Will the scars ever go away or am i stuck with them?

People scar in different ways. Some people get thick scars called keloids no matter how small the cut or nick. Others can be slashed with a meat hook and a year later you can barely make it out.

You don't say how old the sites are - this has a lot to do with the future of the scar.

If it is fairly new, don't pick at the site. If it is healed over apply Vit. E to the skin surface, or mix a capsule of Vit E with some aloe vera twice a day to the skin surface, or use the new anti-scar ointments (like mederma).

If has developed a thick keloid you should talk to a dermatologist about their professional recommendation to reduce the size of the scar.

I have a sister who gets keloids and she has had several reductions of scars over the years. Me? I had my hand caught in a table saw blade while it was running {fortunately, my hand was thrown up and over the blade instead of going downwards. I had 240 stitches to repair my thumb, palm and wrist. That was 10 years ago. All I have now are some fine white marks. Even the nerves regenerated.

So, you see... genetics play a part, and so does the type of incision.

Good luck.

Try using some Mederam on those scars
Hope your health is much improved!!

Really it depends on your doc (and skin type, weird right).

A PICC that was put in properly should not scar. But docs and nurses who put them in "fish" style can leave a scar. The truth is though, no matter how perfectly they put them in, if your skin doesn't have the elasticity to recover from a puncture wound that large, it won't.

In a lot of cases though, skin can take up to a year to rebound so don't freak out yet.
