Anyone know anything about fith disease?!

Question: I think my boys may have it. One is 6yrs old and one is 4. They have red cheeks that itch and a mild fever. I was just wondering if anyone knows if benadryl will help with the itching and redness? Will they have to stay home from school? Is there anything the doctor can give them? I think it is a virus that just has to go away on it's own, is this true? I guess I could google it... but I want to know if anyone has any experience with it. Did your child have it? What did you do?

When I was in grade school, my class had an "outbreak" of EI (erythema infectiosum, the medical name for Fifths disease). Because this is caused by a virus, giving allergy medications really doesn't help that much.

Possibly a topical anti itch cream will suppress some of the symptoms.

I would suggest Tylenol or some other acetaminophen to control the fever and help wih any aches and pains associated with it.

Drink plenty of fluids to help hydration.

Wash your hands all the time.

Generally the red rash on the face occurs 7-10 days after the infection occurs. It may spread to the neck and then the trunk and arms.

You are contagious prior to developing the rash. Usually not afterwards.

Medical treatment isn't usually required unless the rash spreads and doesn't diminish, or the fever persists or doesn't diminish.

You could try bathing them more than once a month. Christ...

fifths diease is no longer contiaous after they break out in a rash. they can go to school it will go away on its on
