Why do I wake up several times in the night and my hand is numb?!

Question: I have noticed lately that my right hand keeps going numb if I leave it in one position. When I move it around it doesnt seem to happen. When im riding in the car, or lying in bed are the two particular times it happens most. The most peculiar thing is there is a slight, slight numbness under my arm pits that stays.. I woke up the other night and was terrified because I could not move my hand at all. I am in pretty good physical condition. Ther is no history of type 2 diabetes in my family that I know of either.

several possibilities-
i suppose, if you get it when you've just woken up, it could be sleep paralysis, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paral...
caused by your body releasing hormones to freeze the body so you don't physically make the movements happening in your dream. But, if it happens when you're driving, i suppose it could be a blood thing, where the blood supply is restricted to a certain part of your body. I don't mean to scare you, but it could be a brain problem. My mum had exactly the same thing a while ago and had to have a CAT (brain) scan. She was fine, it was something to do with the messages being sent from her brain to her hand. I would defiantly go to the doctors/hospital and have it checked out.
Hope you're ok! :)

cause of your position, u r pinching off your vessels with your bony structure and it causes blood flow to lessen....not to mention all the nerves that are there too.....just change position when you sleep to avoid it, prop yourself with pillows if you have to. Don't sleep with your arms above your head or with your body weight on your arms and shoulders. Lie flat or on your stomach. keep your arms open and free.

It sounds like carpal tunnel to me. The only way to tell is to have an EMG done. You will probably notice less grip in the hand that goes numb. It is caused by repetitive motion and it affects the wrist actually. There are 8 bones in your wrist and they are called carpal bones. Each of them have a name, but that is not important. The cure to carpal tunnel is first to try wearing a wrist splint at night or some doctors recommend all the time (depends on doctor and severity of CTS). If it is really bad, surgery can be done to release a tendon in your wrist. It's a very simple surgery, done every day all over the country. This is only speculation on my part, but I see a lot of CTS. Good luck to you.

It is better to consult a neurologist and get it checked if necessary they do some tests. This will happen only when you dont have a proper blood circulation. I was having numbness on my face then MRI brain has been done found some problem and I am using some medicines for that. It is better to consult a doctor.

if you would stop choking the bishop when your sleeping too many hand shandies are bad for your wrist. get someone else to do it for you and give your hand a rest or even take turns at using different hands. watch you do not go blind though!
