What do you do if your numbers are too high/too low??!

Question: Sometimes I do the control test and then retest myself again. And if my numbers are still very high or very low I act accordingly. If too low I eat something. If too high, I call the doctor and dose accordingly.

If your numbers are too high, depending on the number (over 300 for us), then you usually need a correction (extra dose) of insulin. Drinking water can sometimes help bring your numbers down as well.

If they are too low (under 80), you need some fast acting sugar, such as juice or candy like Skittles...stay away from chocolate as it absorbs differently in your system and does not act as fast.

Talk to your healthcare provider (you should have an endocrinologist and a diabetes educator) to find out what the normal range of glucose levels should be for you. Sometimes it varies based on age, etc. Being too high or too low can cause a lot of different side effects, none of which are good for you!.

Good luck!

If my numbers are too high, I take a shot of fast acting insulin (Novolog). If they're too low, I eat :)...usually I just drink orange juice though

If I am surprised by the result, I'll retest. Otherwise if I'm high I'll shoot up some insulin and if I'm low I'll drink some juice or eat a few glucose tablets.
