Type 1 Diabetics?!

Question: Don't you hate it when people put you in the same bracket as type 2 diabetics and think that you have it because you don't exercise or because you EAT TOO MUCH SUGAR? It really gets on my nerves and it is too long to explain to people at school about it.

I dont like it when anyone finds out im a diabetic. When my blood sugar gets too low and i head for sugar, they all freak out. They dont understand. And yes, it is too hard to explain. Ive never had a weight problem, and am very active, so i didnt get the exercise bit. But yes there are still people that think you can get diabetes by eating alot of sugar. I had to eat an apple in my 4th period grade school class, That was annoying for me and all around me. But i did it anyway. Whats worse is when someone else blars out that you are a diabetic. Then, there you are, everyone is looking at you, when you didnt want to draw attention in the 1st place.I once was eating lunch at work with a Doctor, and another co-worker, they were talking about kids. I was speechless when the co-worker took it upon herself to say that "she wont be able to have kids anyway, shes a diabetic". Of course, i dealt with her, in a nice way. People just dont understand. It does get better as time goes by, and who you work with daily. Its you and you know how to deal with it best. Tell them that.

yeah i hate it too, im 15 and at school i still get some idiots saying if you eat a doughnut will you die ad stupid stuff like that, really gets me down sometimes.

OH MY GOD HONEY...you are preaching to the choir. I hate it too. It's been 24 years for me, and if I had a dime for every time someone said, "Is that OK for you to eat?" I would be a millionaire. But taking a minute to explain is well worth it, because they will pass the info along to others, and it's just something we have to do. Maybe you could do an oral report on it? Here's my quick 'n dirty explanation: "Actually, I have the rarer form which is Type 1, the kind you get as a kid. We don't know what causes it yet, maybe a virus or something. I wear an insulin pump (or take insulin shots) and am careful to calculate how much carb I eat and then I give myself the corresponding amount of insulin. It's OK that I eat sugar and other carbs in moderation, as long as I keep track of my blood sugar. But thanks for being concerned." (Repeat as necessary)

Their ignorance should not be your problem. Just remind them that there are more than one kind of diabetes and you have the other kind.

You said it mate!

I just lecture them in a reasonably sarcastic manner.
I've been diabetic for 20 years, and school was the worst. When kids brought chocolate in on their birthday, my teacher would make a big point of not letting me have any. Then again, I always got out of going swimming by faking a hypo!
I do my injections in the middle of restaurants or wherever I am, and if people are curious I'll explain. Luckily I've always had really helpful colleagues. If I start a new job, I explain it to the people I'm working with, just in case they ever need to tell any paramedics on my behalf. Also I test their blood sugar levels for a laugh... :-)

I hate it. Just tell them it is genetic.

It's ignorance. The same people will tell you insulin is a cure. I used to let that stuff bother me, and force feed a scolding and education, but all I was doing was letting it take over my head. Over time I realized it's not a hill I want to die on. Gina needs me, they don't.

Tell me about it!! I hate it, I hate being compared to it. I work out, eat healthy and take care of myself. I swear sometimes people think I just shove sugar in my face all day. When I went on my Insulin pump I had a couple people come up to me and say, "You better stop eating so much sugar, or you will have to wear that for the rest of your life." It made me so mad because I do have to wear it for the rest of my life. I have had people come up and say something stupid like, ohh but your not fat, are you going to get fat. I swear people can be so stupid. Even my own fiance doesn't get it and that is starting to get on my own nerves. I wish they would change the name of type one diabetes to something else. When you are real little with it, people feel sorry for you, when you get older they think it is your own fault and you did it to yourself sometimes.
I use to be a waitress and my sugar went low during one of my shifts. A co-worker started one of my tables and explained I was diabetic and had to check my sugar but I would be there server in the end. The lady at my table must of weighed at least 350+ pounds, if not more than that. She told me she just recently became diabetic and she knew how I felt. Between her and her husband they ordered two appetizers, two huge meals and or course two desserts and she was drinking a regular Pepsi. She kept telling me how awful it was to be diabetic and she hated it, she knew exactly how I felt. I wanted to punch the lady in the face. She didn't care about her diabetes because if she did she wouldn't of been eating what she was. I wanted to tell her lose 250 pounds and then see how your diabetes is. I wish I could just lose some weight and not be diabetic anymore, but I can't, I will always have it. Not that type two is always related to being overweight, but in this case it was. It is nice to rant and rave about it though, good question!!
