It's hard but you have to take control of your thinking. As soon as the bad thoughts come push them out. Do something that takes concentration. Is the counting the thing you have to do so nothing bad will happen? Don't do it and no matter how hard it is wait it out. When you see nothing bad happens write it down to remind yourself and repeat as many times as it takes. I've been through some of this in varying degrees. As you fight it it gets easier. If it doesn't then seek help.

OCD? yes

you could try to take control of it.
for example every time you notice your self doing that...talk your self out of doing it, or concentrate on something else.
reward your self every time you overcome an obsession to do something.

How much does this interfere with your daily functioning? How much distress do the unwanted thoughts and counting cause you? These are just a few questions you'd need to address in finding out if you have OCD. google "Y-BOCS" online (Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale), and you can see where your results put you, as this is a pretty standard diagnostic questionnaire for OCD. You should see a psychologist for an accurate diagnosis though. If you can't or don't want to, realize that trying to make the unwanted thoughts go away only makes it worse, you should focus on ignoring them and allowing them to come. Realize that you aren't going to act on these awful things and that they aren't a reflection of your self, they are just intrusive thoughts.

There's a workbook call "Get out of your mind and into your life," by Steven C. Hayes, ph.d. The cost in US is 19.95. It's designed for anyone that wants to help themselves.
