I have blood and protein in my urine, what could be causing this?!

Question: I went to the doctors yesterday for 6 blood tests and urine tests as i have been vomiting daily for the past few months, however when the nurse tested my urine she said there was blood and protein in it and it has to be sent away for further tests.

As i said i have been vomiting 2-3 times a day for the past few months, i have pain in my back and lower abdomen and i am constantly tired and often feel light headed and weak!

I get my test results back tomorrow but i am very impatient and was wondering if anybody out there has any clue as to what is wrong with me??

You almost certainly have Proteinuria, which is leakage of blood into the urine, it is caused by any number of kidney infections which is why they have sent your blood away for further tests.

When they get the results of these tests back, they will know the exact cause of the infection and will know which antibiotic/drug treatment to prescribe.

It is certainly treatable and not serious, but drinking plenty as has already been mentioned will help in the meantime.

Read my clip on Proteinuria it will explain things more fully.

Infection in kidney or urinary tract I would guess.

It sounds like a urinary tract infection. A course of antibiotics will clear it up. They will have sent your urine away for analysis to see what bacteria is present in it so that an appropriate antibiotic can be prescribed.

In the meantime, get yourself some plain cranberry juice and drink plenty of it, along with water to flush your system out as much as possible.

Take paracetamol to keep the pain under control.

I hope you feel better soon ?

Hmm, this is a difficult one to answer! When you first mentioned blood and protein in your urine, I suspected a possible kidney infection, as this can cause some blood and proteins. However, I am not entirely sure about the vomiting. It sounds as though you have caught one of these horrid bugs doing the rounds, as well as something else! I had the flu last year and it spread to an infection, so it could well be two things. The symptoms do sound similar to what I had though.

All I can say is, if you get worse, dont hesitate to call NHS 24 (08454 24 24 24). They will be able to give you advice and help.

Get well soon!

probably some type of infection. possibly a urinary tract infection. feel better soon.

It's probably a UTI - urinary tract infection - quite common and can be cleared up with antibiotics. Make sure you drink lots of water, and take paracetomol for the pain.
