Heart discomfort?!

Question: Okay so I'm a 15 year old girl and active with running( when it's cross country season but I'm off right now) and on the skinny side weighing 95 pounds being 5 2'. I get these occasional (has happened about 8 or 9 times) heart discomfort so that when I breathe out kind of deeply there's a sharp pain near the bottom of my left lung near my heart. I think it has happened once or twice when I ate too much greasy food, when I laugh way too much, when I get over excited like when I played tennis the other day it occurred, and has randomly happened when I haven't done anything. These attacks last around 30mins to about a couple of hours. The worst case was when I still had it and went to bed and couldn't sleep on my left side because every time my heart beat there was once again a sharp pain but it was gone in the morning. I'm just wondering if this could turn out to be a serious problem or just random chest pains that young people get. Please don't answer if u have no clue b/c it's a waste.

The best thing to do is to err on the side of caution and go to a doctor and be evaluated. Several things came to mind as I read your description. First, you said it is a sharp pain. AS A RULE, which means not every single time, sharp pain in not an indication of cardiac condition. Having said that, I have to say it is still at least possible it is. You need to be evaluated while it is happening. An EKG is sort of like a photo; it takes a "picture" of what is happening at the time. If you wait until after the pain is gone, then an EKG can't take a picture of what's happening because it's gone. An EKG takes the equivalent of an electrical "photo." That's one thing: it probably isn't cardiac, but you need an EKG while it's happening to be sure. If It's sharp, it could be gas, it could be gall bladder and it could be pleuritic, or having to do with the lining around the lungs. It could also be from within the lungs. You are a bit young for gall bladder problems, but it is not outside the realm of possibilities, especially since you say it comes on after eating greasy foods. The fact that it gets so bad you can't lie on your left side also says to me gall bladder. It could be a chest wall spasm, or diaphram spasm or really any muscle could go into spasm. You know how you get charlie horses in your legs if you don't stretch properly, well your chest or lung musces can also go into spasms and "cramps," especiallly if you're a runner. There could be a tiny little air bubble between the lining of your lung and your actual lung. You could have a stress-fractured rib. Not likely, but possible. All these things can cause a lot of pain in the area you described. You need to go have diagnostic tests to find out for sure what's happening to you. Don't put it off. It's probably not serious, but until we know that for sure, better to be safe than sorry. Tell you parents and tell them you need to get to the E R the next time it happens so you can have an EKG at the time of the pain. And good luck with this. And don't wait until it happens again to tell your parents that this has been going on. You can also call your doctor and say what has been happening.

You really need to go to the hospital ASAP. Your condition sounds bad. Someone your age shouldn't be experiencing that. Infact anyone shouldn't be experiencing that.

it might be your colon or gall bladder but check it out

K u are allitle underweight but it wont matter go ask if u have asthma maybe one of ur arteries are lose or u have a rib fracture usually doing stessfull things like running it happens non surgerical. Its ok u maybe just run too hard.Condition like do 60 situps very 15 minutes then running and thepain should eventually go.

Alright before you freak out listen up!

I do think you should see a doc because it **could** be serious. I'm a 19-year-old guy runner and I have had similar stuff happen to me. I have an enlarged left ventrical and it sometimes gets uncomfortable but it is NOT dangerous. You might have this too as it is caused from a lot of excercise.

SECOND is that you might be having spasms in your chest muscles. They don't feel like spasms...it feels like you're having a heart attack when you breath. This too is normal and common.

Either way, go see a doc to be 100 percent sure. Just in case it is serious. DON'T panic until you know what it is for sure. Sometimes you're mind can make things worse than they are.

Good luck.

you could have angina attacks or a hole in your heart which can feel like that when you exercise, or just sitting down, or if you have a viral infection it can go to the hole and is very dangerous....the obvious thing is to go to your family doctor who will send you to a cardiologist for some stress tests, a bubble-echo cardiogram etc.
when you sleep the most comfortable position for the heart is to sleep on your left side as there is a little spot in your chest where the heart nestles into for a cumfy night's sleep. don't ignore this.

Sounds like growing pains.
