Hearing loss in one ear and can hear heartbeat, day and night.?!

Question: I lost about 40% hearing in one ear about 3 weeks ago. It feels like water behind the drum. I can hear my own heartbeat , sometimes so loudly I cant sleep.
Its not only causing problems at work but clostraphobia is setting in. (my right ear was damaged in 'Nam)
Doc has me on Amox. but its not working.
Any Ideas? and Thanks.....big time.

We-are-1,
If you have been seen by your doctor and he has prescribed you Amoxicillin, it would suggest that your ear has been examined and the problem has been diagnosed as an infection, which is why you are, or have been, on Amoxicillin. If this is not the case, and you have the antibiotic without an examination, not only is it bad practice, it could lead to resistance to the antibiotic.
You mention that you have suffered injury in Nam. This should be followed up by the relative specialist . (E.N.T.) who will make a diagnosis. In the UK, if a serviceman suffers injury during combat or duty, upon release from the service, the injury is usually followed up by the nearest service hospital or the case is handled by your doctor who should have all the relative paperwork sent to him concerning your injury.
If none of this is applicable, for whatever reason, then I will start from the beginning.-
Firstly, you would be advised to have your ear examined with an auroscope by your health centre nurse or your doctor. If you have an infection, you should consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Provided that there is only wax in the ear, causing you the problem, then you may either take a doctor's advice or start self-medicating. Dissolve one dessertspoonfull of bicarbonate of soda in a large glass of warm water. With your head on one side, drop some of the liquid into your ear and stay still for about a minute. Before you place your head in the vertical position, place a plug of cotton wool in the ear to prevent the liquid coming out. Remove the plug in around an hour. Repeat this procedure every day for about three days. When you repeat the drops the next day, hold a tissue or towel under your ear when you place your head upright again. The dissolved wax should show on the tissue or towel. When wax is no more seen on the towel or tissue, you should drop clear warm water into your ear to wash out any residue of bicarbonate of soda.
Alternatively, after the first three days of the drops, you may ask the health care staff to syringe your ear. It is a strange fact, but once you have had your ears syringed, you may find that you require this treatment on a regular basis. Maybe each year.

Hope this helps

I had that problem a couple of months ago. I went to have my ear cleaned out by an ear doctor, and days later it was normal.

It drove me crazy hearing the heartbeat through that ear up to that point.

Good luck on figuring this out.

I would suggest getting your ears cleaned. I had that, and it was a big ol' plug of wax.

You might try drops to soften any ear wax first, as if the wax is impacted it's kind of uncomfortable to get it out.

If There Is Hearing Loss Because Of Nam Then I Don't Have Answers, But If It Is Just Because Of Water Or Something Else, I Recommend An ENT (Ear Nose And Throat) Dr., Also Laying On A HOT Rag, Hot As You Can Handle
